Under the general direction of the Vice President, Student Services, the Dean of Counseling and Educational Support Services provides equity-minded leadership and direction for Counseling, Puente, Transfer and Career Services, Dual Enrollment, the Student Success Initiative, Accessibility Support Center, Learning Skills, International Students and other student services projects. The dean directs, supervises, and evaluates faculty and staff relative to areas of assignment.

Cabrillo College's Counseling and Educational Support Services (CESS) Division seeks a full-time, administrator who is dynamic, innovative, and equity-minded to join its staff as the Dean of Counseling and Educational Support Services. The ideal candidate will share Cabrillo's commitment to educating its racially and socioeconomically diverse student population. Cabrillo College serves approximately 12,000 students per term, of which 44% are LatinX, 5% multi-ethnic, 3% Asian, 1% African-American, 1% Filipino, .25% American Indian or Alaskan Native, and .19% Pacific Islander as of Fall 2017. At Cabrillo, over 52% of students are students of color, and 59% are economically disadvantaged. In 2006, Cabrillo College was designated an Hispanic-Serving Institution, reflecting the great responsibility that the College has to the educational attainment and economic well-being of the surrounding community. The successful candidate will join the CESS division dedicated to the use of techniques that draw on culturally responsive approaches to counseling.

About the Department:
The Counseling and Educational Support Services (CESS) Division at Cabrillo College includes several programs designed to support students during their educational journey at the college. CESS also works closely with high school counselors and administrators to assist with the enrollment of high school students. The CESS Division collaborates with both the instructional and student services divisions at the college to deliver effective support to new and returning students. CESS is a part of the Vice President of Student Services component at Cabrillo College.

Examples of Duties

  • Manages and coordinates assigned faculty and staff in compliance with federal, state and legal requirements, district policies, contractual obligations, and sound principles and procedures
  • In collaboration with the Office of Research, Planning and Institutional Effectiveness, directs and conducts research regarding student success and transfer
  • Oversees transfer and general education curricula in the student services component with regard to program development, review, and evaluation
  • Advocates for student services and programs that support equity and student success which aligns with the Guided Pathways model
  • Manages and coordinates MIS data collection and reporting requirements
  • Coordinates support services as described in the Integrated Plan and modifies services as plan changes
  • Manages and coordinates the Dual Enrollment Initiative
  • Explores and develops new revenue streams, which support student success including grants and special funding opportunities
  • Examines, evaluates and makes recommendations for technological innovations to improve processes and services to students
  • Serves as liaison with K-12 representatives relative to the Dual Enrollment and Outreach efforts
  • Directs the preparation and management of the budgets for assigned areas of responsibility
  • Trains, supervises, evaluates performance, and provides leadership to assigned faculty and staff
  • Prepares a variety of reports and correspondence appropriate to assignment, incorporating annual program plans, Student Learning Outcomes, and Service Unit Outcomes
  • Represents the district at off-campus meetings and conferences in relationship with other educational institutions and community organizations
  • Develops, monitors, and implements area goals and objectives
  • Resolves or assists in the resolution of problems and/or complaints and initiates corrective action as appropriate
  • Interprets and performs assignments in compliance with pertinent federal, state and local laws, and contractual regulations relative to area(s) of assignment
  • Chairs and serves on various college committees and participates in professional organizations as appropriate to assignment
  • Prepares a variety of reports and correspondence appropriate to assignments using a computer with various software
  • Drives for position related duties
  • Performs related duties as required or assigned


Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience:

Master's degree from an accredited college or university, AND three (3) years of increasingly responsible experience as an academic administrator or in a faculty leadership role AND four (4) years of successful college teaching and/or counseling experience.

  • Technology used in educational programs and services
Ability to:
  • Communicate effectively verbally and in writing

Other Requirements:
  • Possession of and ability to maintain a valid California driver's license and a safe driving record during the course of employment

Salary: Full-time management assignment (225-day), 12 months per year, Monday through Friday, with evenings and/or weekends as needed. Current eight-step schedule ranges from $8,587 to $12,084 per month. Educational administrators are required to join the State Teachers Retirement System (STRS). Cabrillo College provides an annual doctoral stipend of $3,745 for eligible employees.
