Job Description:

Teach educational assistance classes for students with disabilities, specifically intellectual disabilities, developmental disabilities and autism. Classes will include: Employment Preparation, Computer Skills, Life Skills, Interpersonal Skills and Academic Skills.

Provide instruction in the classroom and in the community (field trips).

Provide work direction to adjunct instructors, instructional assistants, and hourly support staff.

Develop and maintain Student Educational Contracts and document progress for each student at the end of each term.

Collaborate with DSS instructors, counselors and staff on strategies to serve students effectively, including the development of Student Success Agreements and completion of Incident Reports.

Participate in curriculum development and serve on department, school and district committees as necessary to maintain and improve the instructional program; participate in appropriate professional development activities.

Participate in co-curricular activities, including planning, implementing, and teaching in special programs designed to support student success.

Participate in the formulation of Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) and the Student Learning Outcomes assessment cycle.

Maintain formal office and campus hours; participate in department meetings.

Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies pertinent to areas of assignment; learn and apply emerging technologies and advances (e.g., computer software applications) as necessary to perform duties in an efficient, organized and timely manner.

Teach scheduled classes and perform related duties as assigned, including timely compliance with clerical and administrative responsibilities; comply with district, college and division policies in the performance of duties.

Instruct and assist in the growth and success of a diverse population of students through careful preparation of course materials, effective teaching methodologies and informed critical feedback on assignments and discussions.

Work cooperatively with staff and students.

Evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required as part of the regular contract.

Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors degree with any of the following majors: education of students with specific or multiple disabilities; special education; psychology; physical education with an emphasis in adaptive physical education; communicative disorders; rehabilitation; computer-based education; other computer-related majors which include course work on adapted or assistive computer technology for students with disabilities; other majors related to providing specialized instruction or services to persons with disabilities;

OR

Associates degree with one of the majors specified above;

AND

Four (4) years of experience providing specialized instruction or services to persons in the disability category or categories being served.

Desirable Qualifications:
Masters degree in special education, psychology, rehabilitation, and computer-related majors which include course work on adapted or assistive computer technology for students with disabilities.

Two (2) or more years teaching experience in post-secondary education in the areas of assistive computer technology and/or vocational preparation.

Experience working effectively and providing oversight of support staff and engaging with community partners.

Knowledge and competency in working with students with disabilities including learning disabilities, hearing impaired, mental health; emphasis in working with students with ID and ASD.

Experience in the development of course materials, curriculum, student assessments and student success plans (behavior plans) for students with disabilities.

Knowledge and experience in the uses of assistive technology as it pertains to serving students with disabilities.

Knowledge of Federal and State requirements for serving individuals with disabilities.

Established in 1930, the North Orange County Community College Districts School of Continuing Education (SCE) is the fourth largest community college-based continuing education institution in California. Students enroll in SCEs noncredit programs to enhance basic skills and employable skills and/or prepare for credit courses, living independently, and civic participation. Noncredit programs offered at SCE include adult basic skills (high school diploma and literacy programs), English as a second language, U.S. citizenship, parenting, older adults, short-term vocational, and programs for adults with disabilities. In addition, SCE offers a wide selection of community services courses for a small tuition fee including Kids College and Teen Program, fitness, fine arts, home decorative arts, business skills, and financial planning.

Open to all community members interested in making positive changes in their lives, the majority of SCE classes are state-supported. Over 800 courses are taught each quarterly term, serving 35,000 students annually ranging from preschoolers to seniors. SCE students, staff, and faculty represent more than 24 different ethnic groups. In 2014/15, SCE issued 275 high school diplomas and 418 short-term vocational career certificates. SCE has three center locations in Anaheim, Cypress, and Wilshire (Fullerton) as well as over 100 off-site community locations in partnership with local education agencies and municipalities. SCEs Student Success and Support Program provides orientation, assessment, and counseling components while also offering workshops to support students in the area of college transition, financial aid basics, career exploration, resume development, and interviewing techniques.
