Postdoctoral Research Associates

Arizona State University Institute of Human Origins invites applications for three Postdoctoral Research Associate positions to support a multi-year, transdisciplinary research grant, “Evolutionary Foundation of Human Uniqueness: Recovering Patterns of Cognition, Cumulative Culture, and Cooperation.” Anticipated start date is November 2014, but a later start date up through January 2015 may be possible. The successful candidates will be expected to carry out the research plan and fulfill the goals established with their supervising faculty members.

Minimum qualifications for job 10864 include a PhD by the start of appointment; research background or focus in paleoanthropology, vertebrate paleontology, archaeology, or geology; experience in database management and development, ArcGIS, and ArcPad. Desired qualifications for job 10864 include knowledge of integrating field data into geospatial modeling efforts; experience with/working knowledge of remote sensing software such as ERDAS Imagine; programming experience in R, Matlab, or Python is desirable. Candidate will also be expected to join paleoanthropological field and/or museum projects in eastern Africa for up to two months per year. 

Minimum qualifications for job 10865 include a PhD by the start of appointment; research background or focus in anthropology, archaeology, or other relevant field; strong record of research activity and intellectual engagement in questions relevant to understanding the behavior of hunter-gatherers and early modern humans; ability to work closely with faculty and students to integrate various types of knowledge into an agent-based model and perform analysis. Desired qualifications for job 10865 include demonstrated expertise with agent-based modeling, paleoanthropology, optimal foraging theory, and population ecology. 

Minimum qualifications for job 10886 include a PhD by the start of the position with a background in either evolutionary anthropology, evolutionary psychology, gene-culture co-evolution, mathematical modeling of cooperation, behavioral economics, or related disciplines. Desired qualifications for job 10886 include previous research exploring questions relevant to understanding the origins of human cooperation, experience conducting fieldwork with contemporary human populations, evolutionary game theoretic modeling, Python and R programming skills, and willingness to conduct fieldwork among the Turkana. Candidate will be expected to reside for 4-6 months a year at the Turkana field station in Kenya.
