Job Summary: 

THIS POSITION BEGINS AUGUST 2016.  SEE SPECIAL NOTES. 

Conducts classes and labs and develops curriculum in cellular and molecular biology addressing the academic needs of students enrolled primarily in Introductory Biology for Allied Health (BIO156) and General Biology I (BIO181) from diverse backgrounds and/or cultures including students interested in health careers and STEAM/STEM. May teach other biology classes if the department leadership identifies a need. Uses multiple methods of instruction, assessment results, and appropriate technologies to engage students and promote student success. Demonstrates a commitment to service excellence, innovation, assessment, student success, integrity, and diversity in the performance of job duties.  The instructor must be open to teaching in both traditional and nontraditional settings such as accelerated and distance learning. Provides leadership in promoting scientific and biological literacy for students and the local community and builds relationships with high school and university institutions in support of transfer pathways; facilitates undergraduate student research and experiences in business/industry.   Collaborates to provide Biology program for off campus site, PVCC at Black Mountain, as well as leadership for STEAM/STEM.  Will teach at both the Black Mountain and Union Hills sites. May teach evening as well as day classes.

Essential Functions:

50% - Supervises and instructs a diverse population of students, including students in high school concurrent enrollment and bridge programs, in a classroom and/or lab setting, online or hybrid, accelerated, and other alternative schedules and formats; uses learning-centered strategies to engage students and promote student success; demonstrates innovation in teaching and learning and the scholarship of learning by focusing on student learning, retention, and achievement; incorporates instructional technology and alternative delivery or scheduling techniques.  Teaching load will be split between Union Hills main campus and Black Mountain site.

20% - Develops instructional materials and curriculum; develops written syllabi/course outlines and course materials; assesses and evaluates knowledge of subject matter taught and monitors students' scholastic records; prepares and grades examinations and other learning activities; participates in division and college assessment and program review processes; uses assessment and evaluation results to improve instruction and student learning.

20% - Maintains office hours to assist, tutor, and advise students to promote learning, citizenship and personal development; works with students outside of the classroom on instructional activities and projects; facilitates undergraduate student research; provides leadership for STEAM/STEM programs and activities; develops and cultivates relationships with high school and university institutions to develop and promote transfer pathways for science students; develops internship and co-op opportunities with business and industry; provides leadership for the Black Mountain site.

10% - Remains current with new trends and developments in the field through attendance at conferences, courses, seminars, workshops and the science community; develops and enhances knowledge of biology and allied health pedagogy; participates in college and district activities including department/division meetings, committees, workshops and projects; contributes to the academic life and mission of the college; maintains a team approach in collaborating with faculty, staff, and students.

Minimum Qualifications:

1. A master's degree or higher in biology or a biology related discipline OR a master's degree or higher in a medical or health related discipline (i.e. MD, PA, DVM, DPM, DO, DC, DDS, ND), OR a master's degree in education, with a minimum of eighteen (18) graduate semester hours in a Biological or Life Science Area. Acceptable disciplines and coursework include but are not limited to: Agricultural Sciences, Anatomy, Biochemistry, Biology, Bioengineering, Bioinformatics, Biology/Science Education (maximum of six (6) graduate credits can be applied to the eighteen (18) required), Biomedical Sciences, Biosciences, Biotechnology, Botany, Cancer Biology, Cell Biology, Conservation-Wildlife/Plant/Animal, Exercise Science, Exercise Physiology, Evolutionary Biology, Embryology, Entomology, Environmental Science, Environmental Biology, Ecology, Genetics, Immunology, Limnology, Mammology, Marine Sciences, Marine Biology, Medical Sciences, Microbiology - Soil/Medical/Veterinary, Molecular Biology, Mycology, Neurobiology, Neuroscience, Nutritional Sciences, Ornithology, Pathology, Pathophysiology, Parasitology, Pharmacology, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Physical Therapy, Physiology, Plant And Animal Sciences, Public Health - Epidemiology/Infectious Disease/Toxicology, Veterinary Sciences, Virology, Zoology.

2. EDU250 -Teaching and Learning in the Community College-or equivalent must be completed within two years of date of hire

Desired Qualifications:

1. Master's degree or higher in Biology or related field

2. Experience with teaching Introductory Biology for Allied Health (BIO156) and General Biology I (BIO181) or equivalent at a post-secondary institution

3. Demonstrated evidence incorporating instructional technology and biotechnology into biology teaching and learning

4. Demonstrated evidence developing course, curriculum, and laboratory improvement projects

5. Experience with using alternative delivery techniques and/or teaching hybrid courses

6. Experience with facilitating undergraduate student research and/or internships, co-ops, etc. in business/industry for students

7. Demonstrated evidence working with diverse faculty, staff, and/or students including people representing a wide range of cultural backgrounds, ethnicity, age, gender, disabilities, learning styles, lifestyle preferences, first generation college, etc

8. Evidence of using student engagement or collaborative/active learning strategies

Special Working Conditions:

The successful candidate may be required to work during evenings and weekends, at multiple sites, and/or assigned to teach on specific days and/or within the context of alternative schedules; may be exposed to chemicals and fumes; may work with various live macro- and microorganisms; may be required to work with cadavers.
