(2) Assistant Professors, Parks/Rec and Tourism

The Hainan University-Arizona State University International Tourism College (HAITC) is seeking two full-time, tenure track assistant professors in parks and recreation management and tourism management. These positions will be permanently based in Haikou, Hainan, China.

School Information

The School of Community Resources and Development is one of four schools in the College of Public Service and Community Solutions (https://publicservice.asu.edu) at Arizona State University (ASU), a vibrant community of active scholars committed to excellence in education and innovative responses to collective problems.

Hainan University is a comprehensive provincial university in Haikou, Hainan. It is one of the “211 Project” key universities. HAITC is an innovative joint college and the first domestic Sino-foreign cooperative tourism institution approve by China’s Ministry of Education. Currently offering three dual degree programs, the college began in Fall 2017 with over 263 students.  Courses are taught by both HNU and ASU faculty.

Job Responsibilities

The successful candidates will be expected to develop and maintain internationally recognized research programs, deliver excellent in-class instruction at the undergraduate level, and participate in service activities for the college, profession and community. Contributing to graduate education is anticipated in the future. The appointment will begin August 16, 2018.

About the Job

  • Salary will be paid in U.S. dollars, equivalent to the salary of an ASU faculty member in School of Community Resources & Development;
  • All course instruction will be in English

Required Qualifications-Parks and Recreation

  • Earned doctorate in parks, recreation, tourism, leisure studies, community development, planning, economics or a closely related field from an accredited institution at the time of appointment;
  • Evidence of a strong or promising program of scholarship in parks and recreation management;
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness;
  • Ability to work with culturally-diverse populations;
  • Fluent in English

Desired Qualifications-Parks and Recreation

  • Teaching focused on introductory leisure and parks and recreation knowledge, recreation programming, and one or more other areas of expertise including but not limited to community services and professions, park management, recreation management, facility planning, diversity and inclusion, and sustainable communities;
  • Research focused on park management, tourism and city parks, island/coastal recreation management, national parks in China;
  • Demonstrated ability to teach effectively in the classroom;
  • Evidence of work on externally-funded research projects

 

Required Qualifications-Tourism Management

  • Earned doctorate in tourism, recreation, leisure studies, community development, geography, planning, economics or a closely related field from an accredited institution at the time of appointment;
  • Evidence of a strong or promising program of scholarship in tourism studies;
  • Evidence of teaching effectiveness;
  • Ability to work with culturally-diverse populations;
  • Fluent in English

Desired Qualifications-Tourism Management

  • Teaching focused on introductory tourism and leisure knowledge, and one or more other areas of expertise including but not limited to sustainable tourism, tourism planning, hotel management, tourism management, tourism marketing, community services and professions, sustainable communities, and diversity and inclusion;
  • Research focused on tourism education, island/coastal/tropical tourism, tourism in Southeast Asia, agritourism, health tourism, or tourism in tax free zones;
  • Demonstrated ability to teach effectively in the classroom;
  • Evidence of work on externally-funded research projects
