Director of Sponsored Programs

SUMMARY of POSITION:

Philander Smith College seeks a Director of Sponsored Programs who can continue to grow the College’s external funding portfolio.  The ideal candidate will provide leadership for pursuit of grants and oversight of sponsored programs in alignment with Philander Smith College’s Mission and Strategic Plan.  Additionally, the Director will take a strategic approach to institutional efforts to obtain external funding through grants, contracts, and other sources. The Director oversees all aspects of proposal administration, sponsored program agreements, and contract negotiations with external agencies. The position will report to the Vice President of Institutional Advancement.

 

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • While a doctorate degree is preferred, candidates must have a master’s degree.
  • A minimum of 5 years experience working in an office of sponsored research at an institution of higher education.
  • Experience in grant management and grant-writing in an institution of higher education (IHE). 
  • Experience in pre and post awards management processes.
  • Ability to effectively work within multiple deadlines. 
  • Strong interpersonal, organizational, and management skills.  Excellent oral and written communication skills. 
  • Knowledge of grant/contract policies and procedures used in an IHE environment.
  • Preferred Certified Research Administrator.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Write and assists others in the completion of foundation, corporate, federal and state grant applications.
  • Design, lead and oversee the execution of a college-wide public and private grant program.
  • Set goals, develop strategic plans and implement programs to increase external and contract support for the campus.
  • Administer internal grant programs.
  • Plans and implement programs of education and training for staff and faculty.
  • Assist faculty and staff to prepare and submit proposals and manage grants after they are awarded.

RESPONSIBILITIES (cont’d):

  • Disseminate electronic information about funding opportunities to faculty and staff.
  • Inform specific faculty and staff about opportunities in their areas of interest/expertise/research.
  • Administer and interpret applicable federal and/or state laws and regulations regarding grants awarded.
  • Compile statistical reports and other data for reports to the College Administration, including monthly and annual reports, and other reports upon request.
  • Represent the College in liaison with agencies providing grant funding.
  • Review all modification in awards, requests for extension and revisions in implementation schedules, and negotiate with agency representatives concerning issues.
  • Prepare and administer all sub-awards to partner institutions.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Have experience, knowledge, skills and abilities to write grants.
  • Ability to plan, direct, and evaluate the Office of Sponsored Programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
  • Ability to network and communicate with College administrators, faculty, staff, and government and private agencies.
  • Must have excellent writing and communication skills.
  • Understanding of federal regulations and agency guidelines for grants management and sponsored research, including NSF, US DOE, NIH, NEA and NEH.
  • Knowledge of A-110, A-21 and OMB Super Circular.
  • Other duties assigned by the Vice President of Institutional Advancement.
