About the College/Department
The Fay Jones School of Architecture + Design includes accredited departments of Architecture, Interior Design and Landscape Architecture, and an award-winning Community Design Center. Established programs in Rome and Mexico City and a rigorous Honors program within the School complement all departments. Housed in a world-class building designed by Marlon Blackwell Architects, the three departments promote interdisciplinary collaboration and shared resources including state-of- the-art fabrication, model-making labs, wood shop, and materials lab. Collaboration among disciplines is further encouraged through a growing variety of upper level interdisciplinary studios and seminars. A broad range of course offerings equips graduates with the knowledge and critical agility required to meet the challenges of designing for a changing world. Their education provides students with critical frameworks for design thinking that also equip them to assume leadership roles in the profession and in their communities.
The Department of Architecture offers an accredited professional five-year Bachelor's degree in architecture, as well as a four-year Bachelor of Science in Architectural Studies degree, and enrolls approximately 300 students. Summary of Job Duties
The Architecture Department in the Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design at the University of Arkansas invites applications by highly motivated candidates for a nine month full-time tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor, with a start date of August 14, 2017. This position is for a rising professional in architecture with an interest in design pedagogy, multidisciplinary approaches to teaching and design, demonstrated research, creative activity and/or scholarship, and with a creative practice or research focus in both digital and analog fabrication and assembly, automation, and technologies of construction. In addition, the successful candidate will possess an ability to develop scholarly and creative initiatives that engage the department's philosophy of design as an active exploration of making at a variety of scales.
The typical faculty work load is 65% teaching, 25% creative activity, research, or scholarship 10% service. The typical teaching assignment is one studio and one lecture or seminar per semester. All faculty advise upper level undergraduate students.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Terminal degree in architecture (M.Arch or equivalent)
  • Recognized body of creative work
  • Excellent writing and communication skills
  • Ability to work with colleagues in a collegial manner


Preferred Qualifications
  • Post professional education in architecture or an allied discipline
  • Experience in teaching studios and lecture/seminars in one or more of the following areas: digital fabrication and production, design thinking and methods, or in a candidate-defined area of expertise
  • Experience with and enthusiasm for teaching undergraduate courses across the departmental curriculum
  • Experience working collaboratively on a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience in professional practice
  • Experience in an active research, scholarship, or creative activity agenda with a preferred focus on digital fabrication and computational design
  • Exceptionally strong candidates with strength in academic areas other than those listed here as "preferred" will also be considered
