DEAN, COLLEGE OF AGRICULTURE & DIRECTOR, AAES

Auburn University is seeking a Dean for its College of Agriculture & Director of the Alabama Agricultural Experimental Station (AAES) to provide vision and leadership that enhances the College’s tradition of excellence in teaching, research, and Extension/outreach. The successful candidate will serve as the chief academic and administrative officer for the College of Agriculture, reporting as Dean directly to the Provost & Vice-President for Academic Affairs, and concurrently reporting as Director of AAES to Auburn University’s President.  The College of Agriculture has seven departments and one school, 11 undergraduate majors, 23 focus areas, and a range of multidisciplinary programs. Academic units include Departments of Agricultural Economics & Rural Sociology, Animal Sciences, Biosystems Engineering, Crop, Soil & Environmental Sciences, Entomology & Plant Pathology, Horticulture, Poultry Science, as well as the School of Fisheries, Aquaculture & Aquatic Sciences. The College enrollment is 1,355 students with 618 total employees, including 150 faculty and 97 staff at the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station.

Auburn is one of the nation’s premier land, sea, and space grant institutions.  In the 2015 edition of U.S. News and World Report, it was ranked 48th among public universities.  The institution is both highly research-active and committed to maintaining teaching excellence, offering bachelor’s, master’s, educational specialist, and doctoral degrees.  Its fall of 2014 enrollment of 25,912 students includes 20,629 undergraduates and 5,283 graduate students, including 1,072 professional-doctoral students. There are 1,209 full time instructional faculty members distributed across nine colleges and three schools with degrees offered in 200 academic programs. The responsibilities of this position include participating in the leadership of the University as a member of the administration; providing visionary leadership and supervision of the College’s strategic planning and budget development; overseeing teaching, research, outreach, and administration within the College; overseeing faculty recruitment and development including promotion and tenure; providing leadership in fundraising and enhanced extramural support of research; coordinating searches for and recommending appointments of departmental leadership and research directors; representing the College’s interests to various constituencies within the Auburn community; seeking funds from the University and external sources for the College’s teaching, research, and Extension/outreach, missions.  Additional important responsibilities include leadership and management of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station which conducts a broad array of research to support the state’s agricultural industry and economy.The position requires an earned doctorate or equivalent and a distinguished scholarship record sufficient to merit appointment with tenure at the rank of full professor.  The successful candidate should have an outstanding record of academic achievement, a strong commitment to shared governance, interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary program development, and a demonstrable record of successful administrative skills, experience, and cooperation to achieve university-level goals. Effective communication with multiple constituencies, a talent for management of complex organizations, and the capacity for visionary leadership are especially important.
