Auburn University (www.auburn.edu) is seeking candidates for the position of Dean, School of Forestry & Wildlife Sciences. Established in 1856, Auburn University is one of the nation’s premier comprehensive land, sea, and space grant institutions with a dynamic 150 year history of strong commitment to instruction, research, and outreach.  Auburn University is located in the family friendly town of Auburn, Alabama, with a population of 50,000, a renowned school system and nationally recognized medical center.  Auburn is located approximately 50 miles from Montgomery, the capital of Alabama, and 100 miles from Atlanta, Georgia, geographically providing a moderate climate with easy access to both beach and mountain recreational facilities.  The University’s main campus enrollment is over 24,864 students, including approximately 19,799 undergraduates and 5,065 graduate students. There are 1,184 full-time instructional faculty members distributed across nine Colleges and three Schools, with degrees offered in more than 200 academic programs.

 

The School of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences includes programs in forestry, wildlife, and natural resources, and currently enrolls 268 undergraduate and 71 graduate students.  The School is committed to excellence in teaching, research, and extension with 34 faculty, 19 research staff and 24 support staff.   Programs of study are offered for four undergraduate, three masters and two PhD degrees.

 

The School maintains modern research and teaching facilities on and around the Auburn campus including an 110,000 SF facility built in 2005, the 5,300 acre Solon Dixon Forestry Education Center and an additional 4,000 + acres managed as research and demonstration forests that encompass a variety of forested ecosystems.  In addition, the School is committed to international education, and offers its students a number of opportunities to study abroad through its international programs.

 

The School of Forestry & Wildlife Sciences plays a vital supporting role for Alabama’s natural resources and forest-based industry.  Forest products are one of the state’s largest manufacturing industries contributing in excess of $23 billion annually to the economy and employing 1 out of every 10 Alabamians.  In addition, a thriving wildlife industry adds more than $4 billion to the state’s economy and provides more than 53,000 jobs.

The Dean of Forestry and Wildlife Sciences serves as the chief academic and administrative officer for the School and reports directly to the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs.  The Dean’s primary role is to provide vision and leadership in the School and to foster a culture supportive of the School’s interdisciplinary and core missions, both internally and externally to the broader academic community, through excellence in learning, discovery, and engagement. 

 

Candidates should be creative and innovative leaders who understand the local, domestic, and international issues facing forestry, wildlife, and natural resources in the broadest sense.  In addition, the Dean must be able to work closely with others, build consensus, and motivate the faculty, staff, and students to help advance the School. Candidates should have an earned doctorate and an excellent record of teaching and research meriting tenure as a full professor in one of the School’s disciplines.

 

Additionally, this individual must have a strong commitment to student achievement and faculty scholarship, excellent interpersonal skills and possess the drive to move the School of Forestry & Wildlife Sciences forward nationally and internationally through excellence in the teaching, research, and extension missions of the School and University.  The successful candidate must be an exceptional administrator with a proven record of vision resulting in the ability to achieve specific goals, set priorities, and effectively allocate resources.
