The Department of Crop, Soil & Environmental Sciences (formerly Agronomy & Soils) in the College of Agriculture at Auburn University seeks applications for the position of Assistant Professor in the area of environmental science. This is a 9-month, tenure-track position with a 40% instruction and 60% research appointment. The anticipated start date is Dec 1, 2015.

 The position will be housed in the College of Agriculture’s Department of Crop, Soil & Environmental Sciences and will work collaboratively with the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station (AAES).  The successful candidate will be expected to develop a nationally recognized program with emphasis on environmental quality and its impacts on terrestrial, aquatic or atmospheric ecosystems. 

Responsibilities: The individual in this position would be the lead scientist in conducting world class research in soil, aquatic or atmospheric environmental science.  Research programs can be diverse, and can encompass many areas of soil, water and air quality including agricultural, suburban, and urban ecosystems.  Candidates should possess expertise that complements the breadth of a Crop, Soil & Environmental Sciences Department and have an interest in interdisciplinary research within and outside the department and college.  Teaching responsibilities include a split-level undergraduate/graduate course in soils and environmental quality (taught once a year), one undergraduate level course in environmental science, and a graduate level environmental science course (taught every other year) in her/his specialty.   Responsibilities would also include academic advising of students enrolled in the undergraduate Environmental Sciences degree, a program that is housed in the college.  The successful candidate is expected to secure extramural grants, mentor graduate students, and engage in services to the department, college, university and professional societies.

 Qualifications: Minimum qualifications include: 1) an earned Ph.D. in soil science, agronomy, environmental science, or related area (with strong course-work in chemistry, physics and biology/ecology) by the position start date; 2) effective interpersonal communication skills; 3) candidate must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively in English; and 4) meet eligibility requirements for work in the United States at the time the appointment is scheduled to begin and continue working legally for the proposed term of employment.  Postdoctoral experience is desired.
