Job Description Summary

Auburn University seeks a full-time faculty administrator with education and experience in writing pedagogy and faculty development to serve as Assistant/Associate Director of University Writing. This is a continuing 12-month, non-tenure track faculty position with faculty benefits. The position is located in the Office of University Writing ( OUW ), a unit which reports directly to the Provost and supports faculty and students across all Colleges with individual consultations and programs connected to writing and writing instruction, broadly defined, and is responsible for the ePortfolio Project which is Auburn's Quality Enhancement Plan ( QEP ) required for regional accreditation. Rank and salary will be commensurate with experience and qualifications.
We seek a dynamic educator with an interest in program administration and a commitment to, interest in, and experience with the intellectual work of writing pedagogy, teaching of teachers, and integrating writing throughout the curriculum. The successful candidate will join our team to promote writing of all types-including multi-media projects and integrative ePortfolios-and foster student learning through the use of writing across all disciplines. Candidates for this position must be able to promote the inclusion of writing in the disciplines in a variety of ways, for example, by offering workshops, designing new programs, or creating online resources for faculty and students. Underlying all of the work of the OUW is a recognition that embedding writing instruction in the disciplines requires thoughtful and strategic efforts that enhance the institutional culture of higher education. The Assistant/Associate Director's primary responsibilities include working with the Director of University Writing, the OUW team, university partners, and faculty to:
support curricular revisions that embed writing/communication activities, including ePortfolios, in departments and co-curricular programs
promote best practices associated with writing pedagogy such as: supporting reflective practice; offering feedback and opportunities for revision; structuring peer review; developing rubrics to assess communicative effectiveness; working with source materials; scaffolding instruction; moving between academic and non-academic audiences, developing visual literacy and ethical competency in the creation of ePortfolios, etc.
encourage academic programs to expand their attention to graduate students as writers and as teachers of writing in the disciplines
provide appropriate and sustainable programs to support faculty in their own writing and publication activities
design, deliver, and assess these efforts aimed at faculty and students
produce scholarship that contributes to the larger conversations about higher education, the teaching of writing, and the implementation of ePortfolios by drawing on our local efforts and experiences and thereby enhancing Auburn University's profile as a leader in writing and ePortfolios as high impact practices
attend to the needs of diverse student populations and the diverse faculty teaching in this environment
Because the Assistant/Associate Director should expect to be involved in and able to represent Auburn at relevant regional and national conferences, successful candidates should be able to demonstrate professional interest in the larger conversations about writing pedagogy in higher education, especially in connection to student learning, faculty engagement, and institutional transformation. Though a full-time administrative position, there are some opportunities for traditional classroom teaching through departments, the Honor's College, and various interdisciplinary programs if appropriate credentials for these teaching assignments can be established and the need is present.
About the Office of University Writing: The OUW is responsible for a campus-wide writing in the disciplines initiative established in 2010 that embeds significant writing experiences relevant to the discipline in every undergraduate major and defines writing broadly so as to include all forms of communication. The OUW is also the administrative unit responsible for implementing Auburn's 2013 QEP , an ePortfolio Project. The OUW works with individual faculty and departments and offers programs to support writing instruction, the use of ePortfolios, faculty as writers, and research related to writing, writing pedagogy, and ePortfolios. We join with other university partners to do annual events that showcase faculty work with teaching and writing and that prepare faculty and graduate students to create writing assignments, provide in-class writing instruction, respond to and evaluate writing performances, and guide students in learning the habits associated with good writing and good writers. In addition, the OUW undertakes research related to our mission, partners with faculty to seek external funding for specific projects, creates opportunities to celebrate all forms of writing, and brings university writers and their writing to a public audience. The OUW will host the International Writing Across the Curriculum conference in June 2018.
The OUW is also the home for the Miller Writing Center ( MWC ) which serves all students, employs approximately 60 graduate and undergraduate students as consultants, offers more than 4,000 consultations per year in multiple locations, and implements an array of programs for student writers, including in-class and stand-alone programs. Auburn's ePortfolio Project, located in the OUW , focuses on students creating personal websites that synthesize their learning experiences and present evidence of that learning to a professional, outward-facing audience. The OUW provides some direct support to students creating ePortfolios through workshops and programs, but primarily helps faculty integrate ePortfolio thinking throughout the curriculum and scaffold learning experiences that allow students to demonstrate the four learning outcomes associated with the project-critical thinking through reflection, visual literacy, technical competency, and effective communication. Additional information about the OUW , the campus-wide writing initiative, the services provided through our office, and the MWC and ePortfolio Project is available at www.auburn.edu/writing, www.auburn.edu/mwc, and www.auburn.edu/eportfolios.
