The Position
Coordinator for African American Outreach
The coordinator reports to the Director of Multicultural Affairs and provides leadership and innovative programs related to the recruitment, retention, and graduation of African American and other underrepresented students. The coordinator collaborates extensively with the Native American and Hispanic/Latino (a) Outreach Coordinators and other offices.
The successful candidate for this position will:
Design, develop, implement, monitor, and assess African American programming and events that brings students together and leads to academic success.
Provide leadership and serve as an advocate for underrepresented students and understand institutional policies in order to help meet the needs of individual students.
Be a leader in the field, actively engage in professional organizations, and implement best practices in the recruitment and retention of underrepresented students.
Conduct high school, community college, and university visits and presentations in targeted areas to assist in the recruitment of underrepresented students.
Assist in the development of policies and procedures, publications, web pages, etc., to promote diversity at Michigan Tech.
Collaborate with the Affirmative Programs, Institutional Diversity, Academic Affairs, and Student Affairs to help increase the presence and retention of minority faculty and staff.
Education and/or Experience:
Bachelor s degree or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired.
One year experience at a college or university (graduate and/or undergraduate) in student services, academic support and/or education services, or closely related area.
An understanding of the educational environment at highly selective institution like Michigan Tech.
Evidence of work with a commitment to college programs for minority students.
Knowledge of issues and challenges facing African American students in higher education.
Commitment to continued personal and professional development.
Superior organization, interpersonal skills, and facility in oral and written communication.
Experience using personal computers including word processing and spreadsheet/database software.
Demonstrated ability to:
communicate, work, and interact effectively with culturally, economically, and educationally diverse students
work independently and collaboratively
be proactive and creative in approaching problem solving
willingness and ability to work nontraditional hours
use judgment when dealing with confidential information
communicate effectively across cultural boundaries and work harmoniously with diverse groups of students, faculty, and staff
operate a motor vehicle
collect, analyze, and report appropriate and meaningful metrics to measure outputs and outcomes.
