Professor of Practice in International Affairs

The School of Politics of Global Studies (SPGS) is pleased to invite applications for a full-time position, benefits eligible, non-tenure track faculty appointment at the rank of Professor of Practice in International Affairs and Diplomacy. The anticipated start date is December 2021. This is a fiscal-year appointment. Subsequent annual renewal is required, contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources, and the needs of the university. The position will be within the SPGS faculty on the DC campus, located at the ASU Barrett & O’Connor Washington Center at 1800 I Street, NW, Washington, D.C. 20006.

SPGS seeks an applicant with a commitment to excellence to join the Leadership, Diplomacy and National Security (LDNS) Lab and lead the educational functions of the Lab. The Professor of Practice will be responsible for leading and managing the educational programs of the Lab, which include the online MA in International Affairs and Leadership, as well as the SPGS undergraduate Policy Design Studio program. The primary responsibilities of the Professor of Practice will be to oversee marketing, recruiting, and admissions efforts for this program, teach in these programs, and integrate these educational activities into the unique mission of the LDNS Lab. As a senior member of LDNS Lab team, the Professor of Practice will join its co-founders in leading the LDNS Lab in executing its mission and coordinating its international affairs educational support and collaboration with SPGS, The College, and the University as a whole.

The Professor of Practice will be a part of the interdisciplinary SPGS faculty, as well as the LDNS Lab, and will have substantial opportunities to participate in the school’s vibrant intellectual life, as well as that of The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences on the Tempe AZ campus.

Essential Duties

  • Lead the SPGS Policy Design Studio and SPGS Master of Arts Degree in International Affairs and Leadership programs.
  • Manage and direct marketing, recruiting, admissions, teaching, the alumni network and integration of these educational activities into the mission of SPGS and the LDNS Lab.
  • Teach Policy Design Studio and MA-IAL classes, which will include both in-person (at the DC campus) and online courses.
  • Develop strategy and oversee execution for gaining local, national, and international recognition of these programs.
  • Develop strategic goals to grow and expand SPGS and LDNS Lab leadership and international affairs programming.
  • Leverage career networks to support and enhance ASU students’ international affairs education and training.
  • Collaborate with ASU peers and supports fund raising for LDNS Lab programs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Extensive, high-level professional experience working in diplomacy, national security, and/or international affairs (for example, former senior US diplomatic rank of Ambassador or extensive employment experience in the Department of State or similar agency).
  • Exceptional communication and organizational skills

Desired Qualifications

  • Demonstrated success meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities.
  • Prior experience designing and teaching simulation courses.
  • Prior experience designing and teaching online courses.
  • Demonstrated mentorship ability and commitment to increasing educational opportunities for students
  • Experience building relationships with potential donors, alumni, and broader community
