Description

The School of Public Affairs (SPA) in the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for an Assistant Professor position in Emergency Management / Homeland Security (EMHS) to begin August 16, 2022. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible, tenure-track, academic-year (9-month) faculty position. We encourage applicants to apply who would enhance the inclusiveness and diversity of our School.

All tenure-track faculty in SPA engage in research, teaching, and service. For this position, we seek to hire a candidate who specializes in emergency management, hazards governance, disaster science, risk reduction, homeland security, or related areas. The EMHS program in the Watts College encompasses bachelor and master degree programs as well as a robust research and engagement agenda.  The MA in Emergency Management and Homeland Security at ASU is nationally-recognized program (ranked #3 by US News & World Report in 2021) with average enrollments of 400 students including many working professionals in both governmental and nongovernmental organizations. The fully online program enables to professional development and advancement through an innovative, interdisciplinary curriculum that offers five concentration areas—reflective of this interdisciplinary emphasis: emergency management, homeland security, community resilience, biosecurity and biodefense, cybersecurity policy and management.  The School of Public Affairs also oversees a graduate certificate in emergency management, and an undergraduate degree program in Public Service and Public Policy, with emergency management and homeland security representing a major concentration in that degree program.  SPA faculty and students are actively engaged across campus, with local government and internationally, and SPA maintains an active research agenda in emergency and disaster management that supports doctoral research.

Job duties

Successful applicants must demonstrate the ability to contribute to the mission of the School in research, teaching, and service. The specific responsibilities of the position include: teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in the School of Public Affairs, including the online EMHS program; conducting research and publishing scholarship within the person’s specialty area(s); seeking external funding to support scholarly research; engaging in service within Arizona State University at the school, college, and university levels; providing service to the community and the profession; and participating in curriculum development, program planning, and student advisement.

Required qualifications

  • A Ph.D. in public administration, public policy, emergency management, geography, sociology, complex systems, public health, political science or related field; and
  • Strong evidence of a research agenda (including dissertation and/or published journal articles) in emergency management, hazards governance, disaster science, risk reduction, homeland security, or related areas.
  • Demonstration and commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging.

Desired qualifications

  • Experience teaching emergency management, hazards and disasters, homeland security or other similar courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels that align with the EMHS curriculum.
  • Demonstrated field or work experience at the local, state, or federal level in emergency management or homeland security.
  • Demonstrated experience publishing in peer-reviewed journals or academic press books;
  • Demonstrated experience writing grant proposals;
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success while working with broadly diverse populations.
