The School of Community Resources & Development in the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions is seeking (one) full-time, benefits-eligible, 9-month associate or full professor with summer administrative responsibilities to serve as director for the Center for Sustainable Tourism. This is a tenured position and requires the candidate to provide evidence of scholarly contributions as well as fulfill all other tenure requirements at ASU. Under administrative direction, this position is responsible for developing and implementing strategies for the center, and engaging in cross-disciplinary collaborative projects with outside organizations as well as other ASU/school entities in support of the college’s vision. Expertise in tourism/recreation management, economics, geography, community development, economic development, planning, or a closely related area is desired. The position is located in Phoenix, Arizona.

Job Responsibilities

This position requires the director to develop, facilitate and implement strategies that lead to the creation of cutting-edge and cross-disciplinary research related to sustainable tourism. The director manages the center operations by augmenting the capacity of faculty members affiliated with the center, as well as enhancing networks between the center and local, national and international industry partners.  The director is also responsible for the expansion of externally (e.g., federal, foundations, private, etc) funded research opportunities and the facilitation of center-funded research positions for high-caliber postdoctoral candidates and graduate students.  Operational tasks encompass overseeing CST budgeting and financial reporting as well as communicating impact to School and College leadership.  As a tenured research faculty, the director maintains a strategic production of cross-disciplinary collaborative research and scholarship. 

The successful candidate will be expected to teach and mentor graduate and undergrad students.  Excellent in-class or online instruction delivery is expected. Course assignments will be determined in conjunction with the school director and the dean. The faculty member will also participate in service activities for the school, college, university and community. The appointment will begin July 1, 2022 with a one-week orientation at ASU in mid-August 2022.

 

Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate in tourism/recreation management, economics, geography, environmental studies, community development, economic development, planning or a closely related field from an accredited institution at the time of appointment
  • Meet the academic requirements for appointment at the rank of associate or full professor with tenure
  • Proven record of seeking, writing, securing, and managing substantive external grants and contracts
  • Demonstrated engagement in a strong program of research and scholarship in tourism studies, community development, economic development or a closely related field
  • Demonstrated ability to work with culturally-diverse populations

Desired Qualifications

  • Evidence of visionary thinking and strategic leadership
  • Evidence of ability to identify models for effective partnerships between universities, industries, local/global government agencies, and communities
  • Evidence of ability to work with internal and external stakeholders such as faculty, students, staff and senior level administrators to maintain a collaborative environment
  • Evidence of ability to organize high professional caliber think tanks as well as establish a mutually beneficial model for visiting scholars/professors and postdocs
  • Evidence of ability to fulfill administrative duties and possess strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated participation in collaborative and cross-disciplinary partnerships in research and scholarship
  • Demonstrated ability to engage in industry and community outreach initiatives and collaboration at the local, national and/or international level
