Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University
The School of Music in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks an instructor of music therapy for a one-year, part-time, benefits eligible position for the 2019-20 academic year. The position is an academic year (nine month), non-tenure track position. Anticipated start date is August 2019.
The successful candidate is expected to coordinate and supervise music therapy practicum and advanced clinical training placements, and serve as the liaison with practicum site supervisors. The candidate will serve the school by making community connections and developing community partners for new practicum and internship experiences. The candidate will teach the undergraduate and graduate practicum seminar for all students enrolled in fieldwork. The candidate will coordinate and document completion of any necessary practicum paperwork (e.g. contracts, affiliation agreements, fingerprint clearance).The candidate may teach additional courses in the curriculum based on the needs of the area.

Located in one of the most expansive metropolitan centers in the United States and situated in the Sonoran desert, the ASU School of Music supports a broad range of inquiry. Programs within the School of Music lead to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music with an optional concentration in Music and Culture; Bachelor of Music (BM) in Music with concentrations in music performance, jazz studies, music theatre, music education, music theory and composition, music therapy as well as three minors in music theatre, music studies and music performance; Master of Arts (MA) in Music with concentrations in ethnomusicology or musicology; and Master of Music (MM) in composition, conducting, music education, music performance, performance pedagogy and music therapy. In addition, the school offers a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in composition, conducting and performance and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with a concentration in music education or musicology, as well as a graduate certificate in theory pedagogy. The Music Therapy Program and the ASU Music Therapy Clinic are part of the Division of Music Education and Music Therapy. The Music Therapy Program offers dynamic undergraduate and master’s degrees built on the principles of music therapy theory and practice, flexible musicianship, traditional and progressive clinical application, and community leadership through inclusive arts engagement and innovative programming. The master’s degree offers in-depth study in a concentration area within either a two-year advanced master’s program for students already certified, or a three-year equivalency master’s program for students who have not completed music therapy coursework and training.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in music therapy
- MT-BC credential
- Minimum of one years of experience supervising students in practicum or internships
- Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion
- Meet requirements for adjunct faculty and pre-internship supervision as stipulated by the AMTA Standards for Qualifications and Staffing: www.musictherapy.org/members/edctstan/
Desired Qualifications:
- MM degree in music therapy
- Demonstrated ability to teach effectively at the undergraduate and graduate level
- Diverse background in clinical practice as a music therapist, and/or advanced training in a music therapy practice (e.g., Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy, Developmental Music Therapy, Guided Imagery and Music, Music Psychotherapy, Neurologic Music Therapy, Medical Music Therapy, etc.); Demonstrated interest in innovative course development and/or creative approaches to teaching.
- Demonstrated expertise in developing community partnerships projects
