Physician Assistant Program Standardized Patient

Position Title: Physician Assistant Program Standardized Patient

Department: PA Program, School of Science

Job Summary: The Physician Assistant Program at Marist College is seeking highly qualified individuals to serve as a Standardized Patients. The primary responsibility of this per diem position is to portray a patient in a clinical setting. The actor will be asked to convey consistent, accurately specific emotions, behaviors, and disease symptoms while interacting with Physician Assistant (PA) students during standardized patient encounters designed to enable experiential learning and/or assessment of students' skills.

Minimum Qualifications: The successful candidate will have experience in a higher education setting, demonstrated effective communication and collaborative skills in a team-oriented environment, and a history of successful time management. In addition, the following are additional skills and qualifications required for the position:
  • High School diploma or equivalent required; college degree preferred
  • Prior related experience
  • Prior acting experience and/or experience as a Standardized Patient preferred

Essential Functions:
  • Memorize a case script detailing specific emotions, behaviors, and disease signs/symptoms
  • In a standardized, accurate, and reliable manner present/act all aspects of case information, including history of current problem, affect/behavior and physical findings
  • Ability to accurately and convincingly maintain a specific patient character as trained when responding to student questions
  • Be highly dependable and punctual
  • Demonstrate flexibility and reliability with scheduling and assignments
  • Work in a professional manner when interacting with learners, faculty, trainers and peers
  • Ability to understand and follow directions and accept ongoing feedback from SP program trainers and incorporate it into case presentation
  • Follow written and verbal feedback instruction and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing
  • Be willing to be audio and videotaped during student sessions
  • Be willing to wear a hospital gown with only undergarments underneath
  • May be on camera and/or observed live through video monitor
  • Maintain confidentiality of information related to cases, student behaviors and feedback evaluations
  • Standardized Patients may be physically examined by students as part of their clinical learning experience. These examinations may include: listening to heart and lungs with a stethoscope; pressing on the abdomen, neck, face and limbs to assess tenderness; using a scope to look in ears, eyes, nose and throat; taking pulse and blood pressure; checking muscle strength, reflexes, range of motion, and gait.

About the Department: The School of Science comprises five undergraduate departments (Athletic Training; Biology; Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physics; Environmental Science and Studies); and two graduate programs (Physician Assistant Studies and a Doctorate in Physical Therapy program).

The PA program is housed in a new facility appointed with state-of-the-art teaching spaces including a simulation suite and traditional gross anatomy lab.

The ARC-PA has granted Accreditation-Provisional status to the Marist College Physician Assistant Program sponsored by Marist College. Accreditation-Provisional is an accreditation status granted when the plans and resource allocation, if fully implemented as planned, of a proposed program that has not yet enrolled students appear to demonstrate the program's ability to meet the ARC-PA Standards or when a program holding Accreditation-Provisional status appears to demonstrate continued progress in complying with the Standards as it prepares for the graduation of the first class (cohort) of students. Accreditation-Provisional does not ensure any subsequent accreditation status. It is limited to no more than five years from matriculation of the first class.

Work Schedule: Work schedule can consist of up to four separate days per semester with varying hours.
