Financial Aid Counselor I


Salisbury University, a member of the University System of Maryland, is a regionally accredited four-year comprehensive institution offering 60 distinct graduate and undergraduate programs. Located on the historic Eastern Shore, SU's beautiful campus is some 30 miles from the Atlantic beaches and 2.5 hours from Baltimore and Washington, D.C.

Salisbury University is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Financial Aid Counselor I.

Primary Job Duties: Serve as the Financial Aid Office's first point of contact for students and parents, providing counseling to students regarding financial aid eligibility through in-person, phone, and email conversations. Under direct supervision, receives and reviews input and output data for accuracy, completeness, and adherence to established state, federal and institutional policies governing financial aid. The Financial Aid Counselor will evaluate financial aid applicants and interprets financial aid eligibility in accordance with state, federal and institutional policies governing financial aid. Create outgoing correspondences including mail merge process for aid notification, verification notification and loan processing. Receive federal application data and input into Financial Aid software to establish parent loan application information. Ensure accuracy and timeliness of correspondences and data entry. Prepare and track POs and spending in the financials system. Oversee the process of imaging all documents received by the Financial Aid Office to insure perpetual retrieval of pertinent information. Train and lead student workers in the Financial Aid Office.

Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor's degree and one year of professional experience in financial aid, higher education, accounting, or business.

Thorough knowledge of team office practices, procedures and equipment; of business English, grammar, spelling, and punctuation. General knowledge of the principles of team leadership and office management. Skill in interpreting and applying departmental policies and procedures; in operating manual and automated office equipment including personal computers and related software; in composing correspondence electronically and through postal mail, compiling statistical data, and preparing reports; in performing mathematical computations; creation and maintenance of paper and computer files; in effective telephone usage; in organizing, coordinating, and executing multiple assignments under specific time constraints. Ability to maintain poise and courtesy under pressure; to project a positive and professional image; to interact with students, parents and staff at all levels in a courteous and efficient manner; to lead analysis of clerical problems and selection of corrective action; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to establish and maintain effective work relationships both within and outside the team. Ability to maintain confidentiality of information and handle sensitive information with discretion and tact. Knowledge and skill in the use of Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word and Excel.

Preferred Qualifications: PeopleSoft experience.

This is a full-time, non-exempt, State position with a full benefits package.
