DESCRIPTION: Under the immediate supervision of a registered nurse, nurse practitioner, physician, or other Health Center specialized personnel, the Medical Assistant (MA) must have the skills, knowledge, and experience to function seamlessly between the front and back office duties. They need to exercise and apply predictability skills to anticipate the Physician's and Nurse Practitioner's requests when they are treating patients. In addition, the MA will coordinate all operational and administrative activities of a clinic front office

Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Sets up rooms and treatment trays for exams and assist physician and nurse practitioner with procedures; performs housekeeping chores such as incidental cleaning of appliances and utility equipment in clinical area.
  • Performs laboratory collection including blood draws as directed by physician or nurse practitioner.
  • Performs wound care and splint care as directed by physician and nurse practitioner.
  • Performs on-site laboratory tests including accucheck, Hcue, rapid strep, mono spot, urine pregnancy, and urinalysis testing.
  • Performs such clinic support duties as answering telephone; scheduling appointments; ordering supplies; completing forms to obtain laboratory work, X-rays; waivers, computing charges; maintaining records, sort mail, and copy medical records.
  • Collect and handle all fees and write our promissory notes. Clear register and write in Daily cash receipt log at the end of the day.
  • Maintain documentation of prescriptions to pharmacies, update appointment book/sign-in sheet, and manage laboratory log book.
  • Post all of the payments in the EMR financial system.
  • Reviews and completes physician and nurse practitioner orders; dispenses medication with education for the patient. Provide first aid, wound care or splint care to patients per protocol or provider order.
  • Takes and records routine measurements of height, weight, temperature, blood pressure, pulse and respiratory rate and documents routine information on forms and/or records.
  • Escorts patients to clinical areas and gives information regarding dressing for a medical examination.
  • Changes linens in examination and treatment rooms; stocks linens and supplies; cleans and/or autoclave instruments, equipment and glassware.
  • Administers vision screenings, TB skin tests, vaccinations, and med nebulizer treatments as directed by physician and nurse practitioner.
  • Assists clinical staff members by providing a variety of duties of similar level and scope.
  • Performs other duties and special projects as assigned or directed.

    MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Position requires a high school diploma or equivalent with current Medical Assistant certificate acquired from a school recognized by the American Association of Medical Assistants or American Medical Technology and current CPR certification. Plus one (1) year of experience in a physician's office, hospital, health center, walk-in clinic or as a school medical assistant. Must have working knowledge of aseptic techniques and uses and application of simple medical supplies and equipment, such as blood pressure devices, thermometers, dressings and instruments used in medical examinations or treatments. Must have ability to use and understand limited medical assistance terminology necessary to fulfill quickly and accurately the physicians' and nurses' instructions; and ability to perform assigned skilled clinical assistance tasks rapidly and accurately. Successful candidate must possess ability to learn new techniques and methods in setting up and cleaning examination rooms and surrounding areas; ability to adhere to rigid standards of cleanliness and sterile techniques; ability to learn and carry out light custodial duties. Successful candidate will have experience using an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system and be competent in a variety of Windows-based computer programs including MS Word and Excel. Successful candidate must be able to competently interact with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
