Duties and Responsibilities
In recognition of the vast unmet civil legal needs of low-income residents of the State of Illinois and understanding that these needs are best served when addressed by a trained attorney, the Board of Directors of the Illinois Bar Foundation is funding year-long post-graduate legal fellowships in partnership with law schools operating civil legal aid clinics in the State of Illinois. For the sixth consecutive year, Loyola University Chicago School of Law has been chosen as one of the select IBF grant recipients. The IBF and Loyola University Chicago will share the cost of this Fellowship which allows a qualified graduate to work in the Loyola University Community Law Center.

The Loyola University Community Law Center serves clients whose main source of income is public assistance or SSI as well as those classified as the working poor, who are struggling to meet their obligations. Candidates should demonstrate a clear commitment to a legal career in public service. Additionally, candidates should have an interest in litigation and a desire to gain invaluable courtroom experience. The position requires the clinical fellow to handle his or her own caseload under the supervision of the clinic s director, Theresa Ceko. Cases handled by the clinic include but are not limited to landlord/ tenant disputes, clients petitioning for guardianship of a disabled adults, representing minors as the Guardian ad Litem, as well as a myriad of family law related matters. The fellow will also be representing Chicagoland veterans and their families as part of our Veterans Practicum in partnership with the Illinois Armed Forces Legal Aid Network. The fellow will be expected to appear on all court dates under the authority of a 711 license prior to being admitted to practice law in the state of Illinois in November of 2019. Once admitted to the Illinois Bar, the fellow will also assist in the supervision of student work and classroom exercises.

Only law students who graduated in December of 2018 or will graduate in May of 2019 will be considered for this position.

The fellowship is a full-time faculty position including benefits with a salary of $40,000 for its one year duration with an approximate start date of August 12, 2019.
