The University of Redlands in Southern California is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Interim Director of Diversity Initiatives. The selected candidate will provide multicultural leadership in support of the academic and social needs of students representing a variety of social identities. The incumbent will encourage and model collaboration and invite the entire U of R community to learn, promote, and problem-solve, while building relationships and coalitions across campus. He/she/they will perform in an interim capacity, informed by a prior consultant- led comprehensive review and in anticipation of the future hiring of the University's first Senior Diversity and Inclusion Officer. The Director will report to the University Dean of Student Affairs and serve on the University-wide Council on Inclusiveness and Community (UCIC).

The Director sets a welcoming tone of community, innovation, creativity, acceptance, and inclusion for students, staff, faculty, and administrators. He/she/they will work collectively and regularly with the Student Affairs team; faculty colleagues from across campus; the Pride, Gender Justice, and Multicultural Centers; Native Student Programs; and the Johnston Center for Integrative Studies.

The duties and responsibilities of the Interim Director of Diversity Initiatives include, but are not limited to:
  • Supporting a campus-wide effort to promote inclusion and community in the context of U of R's strategic framework
  • Providing multicultural leadership and serving as a mentor and advisor for various students and student populations, including those with overlapping identities
  • Collaborating with campus affiliates, including representatives of academic programs and campus service providers, to deliver a high-impact schedule of educational and social programming
  • Serving as a member of the University-wide Council on Inclusiveness and Community (UCIC)
  • Employing social justice communication techniques including calling-in, cognitive empathy, and active listening.
  • Developing opportunities to host workshops/trainings involving concepts such as implicit bias, privilege, cultural competency, etc.
  • Supporting recruitment events and initiatives, such as the University's comprehensive first-generation programs
  • Developing a student advisory board as a means of hearing and understanding student voices

    Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master's degree from an accredited institution
  • Three years of paid, progressively responsible work experience
  • Experience in educational access, retention, and completion efforts
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and support the experiences and successes of diverse populations

    Other Requirements:
  • Knowledge of racial and cultural identity development and student retention theories and strategies
  • Skill in developing partnerships with constituents in Student Affairs and other areas
  • Ability to work collaboratively to accomplish goals and reduce potential obstacles to a welcoming and just environment
  • Ability to work independently, utilizing known and new resources
  • Ability to communicate effectively (written and oral) with a broad range of diverse people to maintain good working relationships
  • Ability to work with all groups within the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic background of university students, faculty, and staff, including those with disabilities, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, international students, and veterans
  • Ability to display sensitivity and discretion
  • Ability to budget responsibly
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and competing objectives in a fast-paced environment
  • Excellent judgment and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to professionally manage confidential and sensitive information
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously with superior organization and well- developed attention to detail
