JOB SUMMARY:

Reporting to the AVP and serving as a member of the major gift team, The Director of University Advancement is responsible for oversight and execution of a robust portfolio of 75 major gift prospects and donors, securing $25,000+ gifts from individuals and appropriate entities. The Director of Advancement shall identify (with assistance from the AVP and Prospect Research staff), engage, cultivate, solicit, and steward individuals (alumni, parents, and friends of Adelphi) and other entities who have the financial capacity to support the programs of the University. The Director of Advancement will have annual expectations for philanthropic income produced, personal visits, solicitations submitted, moves management plans under management, and other actions with donors and prospects.

The Director of University Advancement builds, sustains, encourages, and supports productive relationships with and among colleagues in Advancement, External Relations and across the University, and promotes the pursuit of excellence in all aspects of University Advancement's work.

REPORTS TO: Assistant Vice President for University Advancement (AVP)

RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES:

  1. Build up to an ultimate portfolio of 75 major gift prospects and donors.
  2. Develop and execute strategies and detailed Moves Management plans for prospects.
  3. Develop explicit strategy statements to include philanthropic interest; date of ask; ask amount; expected yield; and expected date of close for each prospect to be solicited in a given fiscal year.
  4. Refine and/or develop gift opportunities for major gift prospects and donors in accordance with the priorities of Adelphi's strategic plan and related to specific unit/school/college needs.
  5. Participate in regular prospect screening and strategy sessions with University Advancement and External Relations staff.
  6. Make the best and most effective use of natural partners (e.g. Adelphi administrators, faculty, alumni) in cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship activities.
  7. Conduct appropriate qualifying (identification/discovery); cultivation; solicitation; and stewardship activities.
  8. Assess prospects' ability and willingness to provide philanthropic support for Adelphi.
  9. Cultivate relationships, solicit gifts, and provide excellent stewardship to donors of $25,000 and above.
  10. Conduct a minimum of 140 personal, face-to-face visits per year with a minimum 70 qualification visits. Focus on those prospects with the greatest capacity to give and who are closest to a gift decision.
  11. Staff deans, faculty and others, as needed, in cultivation, solicitation and stewardship strategies for top donors and prospects.
  12. Initiate contact with prospective donors; reengage lapsed major donors and devise strategies to redirect their interests; qualify entities as major gift prospects.
  13. Document all activities in the University Advancement CRM.
  14. On behalf of the University, and with the approval of the AVP, author and present written proposals appropriate to a prospect's interest and financial ability.
  15. Report, track, and forecast results from all activities. Provide regular reports on monthly, quarterly, and annual results.
  16. Perform other job related duties as assigned.

REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
  2. Strong interpersonal skills. Ability to work well with prospects, donors, and other volunteers.
  3. Ability to effectively manage multiple priorities and to creatively solve problems.
  4. Ability to speak effectively and persuasively and to make presentations to individuals and small.
  5. Ability to work independently. At the same time, ability to work effectively on teams with both internal (faculty/staff) and external (alumni/parents) partners and volunteers.
  6. Understanding, appreciation, and knowledge of the prospect/donor cycle: identification, engagement, cultivation, involvement, solicitation, stewardship.
  7. Understanding and commitment to the mission, vision, and programs of Adelphi University.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Ability and willingness to travel. Night and weekend work will be required.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

  1. Bachelor's Degree required. Master's degree preferred.
  2. Minimum five years of progressively responsible experience in fundraising, constituent relations, or a similar field required.
  3. Experience in face-to-face solicitations required.
  4. Demonstrated track record in securing major gifts is required.
  5. Experience with Raiser's Edge (preferred) or similar CRM required.
  6. Experience in higher education fundraising required.
  7. Knowledge of and experience with Moves Management system preferred.
