The School of Music in the Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts at Arizona State University seeks an instructor of voice for a one-year, full-time, benefits eligible position for the 2019-20 academic year. The position is an academic year (nine month), non-tenure track position. Anticipated start date is August 15, 2019.

The successful candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate applied voice instruction to students majoring in music whose primary instrument is voice. The successful candidate may also teach advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in the instructor's area of specialization with consideration for departmental needs.

Programs within the School of Music lead to the degrees of Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Music with an optional concentration in Music and Culture; Bachelor of Music (BM) in Music with concentrations in music performance, jazz studies, music theatre, music education, music theory and composition, music therapy as well as three minors in music performance, music theatre, and music studies; Master of Arts (MA) in Music with concentrations in ethnomusicology or musicology; and Master of Music (MM) in composition, conducting, music education, music performance, performance pedagogy and music therapy. In addition, the school offers a Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) in composition, conducting and performance and the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) with a concentration in music education or musicology, as well as a graduate certificate in theory pedagogy. Required Qualifications:

  • DMA in voice performance, ABD considered, or MM with commensurate experience
  • Demonstrated excellence teaching undergraduate applied voice instruction to performance, music education, music therapy and bachelor of arts majors.
  • Record of creative activity (performance) and/or scholarship
  • Evidence of a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in teaching and service


Desired Qualifications:

  • Expertise in classical, musical theatre, choral and/or contemporary commercial music performance practice styles and vocal technique
  • Demonstrated interest in innovative and/or creative approaches to teaching
  • Professional musical theatre and/or operatic stage experience
  • Expertise in lyric diction
  • Tenor preferred
