Temporary Lecturer - California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science

Temporary Lecturer - California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS)

University of California, San Diego

The Jacobs School of Engineering at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) offers a pre-collegiate academic summer residential program, the California State Summer School in Mathematics and Science (COSMOS). The primary objective of the COSMOS program is to advance high school students' interest in math and science through challenging, engaging course work and life in a residential university. The COSMOS program is intended to motivate prospective scientists, engineers, and mathematicians to actively participate in the business and higher educational sectors of the State of California. The central experience for COSMOS students includes three courses: two science, math, or engineering courses and one science communication course. Ten academic clusters serve a total of ~205 students.

The COSMOS Program has multiple opportunities for temporary, non-tenured track lecturer (Unit 18) positions. Position appointments may be for a duration of one to two sessions.

Candidates should possess a B.A. or B.S. in a field of math or science, or relevant expertise; sensitivity to, and respect for, high achieving students; experience teaching high school students; familiarity with the team teaching and the inquiry-based learning aspect of the program; and enthusiasm for forming partnerships with university researchers.

Duties include the following:

  • Serve as a pedagogical bridge between high school student learning & university faculty teaching.
  • Consult with faculty, research scientists, and graduate students on course design.
  • Directly participate in all classroom, laboratory and fieldtrips.
  • Collaborate with other Teacher Fellows to design customized Science Communication curriculum
  • Assist students in the development of their team research project presentations.
  • Form relationships with university researchers and scientists.
  • Learn about current field research from distinguished guest speakers.
  • Access to state-of-the-art classrooms and laboratories.

We encourage candidates to send applications as soon as possible. Applications received by April 23, 2019 will be given full consideration. However, the search will remain open until the positions are filled.
