Overview:

The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning (SGSUP) at Arizona State University (ASU) seeks applications for two Postdoctoral Research Scholars with an anticipated start date as early as August 15, 2019 and preferably should be filled by October 1, 2019. The full-time, non-tenure-track, benefits-eligible, fiscal year (July 1 – June 30) positions are for one year. Extensions may be possible contingent upon satisfactory performance, availability of resources and the needs of the university.

The positions will contribute to spatial-temporal analysis, social data analytics, modeling, citizen science, and specific community resilience topics in service to ASU’s Knowledge Exchange for Resilience (KER). KER is a university-wide effort to produce insights and solutions for community resilience themes in collaboration with residents, foundations, governments, private enterprise, nonprofits, and other groups. The co-creation of this knowledge is accelerated through the exchange of experiences and expertise between the university and the community on how individuals, groups, and institutions tend to respond to social, economic, and environmental disruption to known vulnerabilities, specific past threats, and challenges emerging from profound and rapid change.

The positions will be housed at ASU’s Tempe campus. The Tempe campus has approximately 60,000 students and is located in the rapidly growing metropolitan Phoenix area, which provides a wide variety of recreational and cultural opportunities and is especially desirable for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy biking, hiking, skiing, and other activities in the exquisite Arizona canyon lands and rugged terrain.

Job Description:

SGSUP is seeking to fill two Postdoctoral Research Scholar appointments that will contribute to at least two of the areas listed below. The successful candidates will be expected to articulate a specific plan of research to build on existing research and take research in new directions. Recruited candidates will also assume a leadership role in helping to develop integrative proposals and will also support the day-to-day operations of the lab under the direction of the KER Executive Director.

Ongoing research areas of interest include:

  • Community Resilience
  • Spatio-temporal Analysis
  • Social Data Analytics
  • Modeling and/or Visualization of Complex Data

Essential Duties:

  • Contribute to existing research projects and publications
  • Assist in mentoring current graduate students in their research
  • Provide guest lectures as appropriate and consistent with your expertise for graduate / undergraduate courses, partner meetings
  • Contribute to the day-to-day operations of KER

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in geography, statistics, computer science or a related field by time of appointment.
  • Strong data analysis skills with software such as R, SPSS, Matlab, ArcGIS, ERDAS IMAGINE
  • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills (in English)
  • Demonstrated research and publication record in the peer-reviewed literature within some aspect of the field of resilience

Desired Qualifications:

  • Strong programming skills (e.g., C, Fortran, Python, scripting languages, etc.)
  • Strong modeling and/or visualization skills
  • Experience working within a unix/linux environment
  • Experience working with community organizations external to the university
  • Experience working with a variety of data sources and types, e.g. unstructured, qualitative, quantitative, socioeconomic, environmental, official, crowdsourced
  • Experience working with citizen science programming
