College Nurse/Nurse Supervisor

 

The College Nurse/Nurse Supervisor at the Davidson College Student Health Center will oversee the operation of the Student Health Center in providing care and health-related advice to the student population, under the general supervision of Director Student Health & Counseling.  In addition to performing clinical duties as a nurse, the College Nurse/Nurse Supervisor will recruit, supervise and oversee the training of health center staff.  The College Nurse/Nurse Supervisor will work collaboratively with the Counseling Center staff, the Health Educator, who reports to the Dean of Students Office, and other campus offices, such as Academic Access & Disabilities Resources, Athletics, the Dean of Students Office, Residence Life, and with community partners and providers. The College Nurse/Nurse Supervisor will have opportunities to participate in training and professional development activities coordinated by the Student Life Division.

 

Position Summary:  

  • Perform clinical duties as a registered nurse   
  • Recruit, hire, train, mentor and evaluate the clinical nursing staff to ensure quality of care standards are met; establish administrative and clinical policies & procedures to assure the provision of high-quality health care to a diverse student population
  • Ensure adequate staffing for daily provision of services and for immunization clinics
  • Serve as a primary point of contact with Davidson Family Medicine; manage day-to-day communication and staffing, and problem-solve with student patients and providers; convene regular meetings with Davidson Family Medicine partners and representatives from Davidson College Student Health and Counseling and Dean of Students Office
  • Manage key relationships with Academic Access & Disability Resources; Athletics, including Sports Medicine; and Dean of Students Office, including the Associate Dean of Students; participate on an as needed basis in meetings of the Incident Management Team or other case management groups, such as Students of Concern
  • Regularly evaluate the effectiveness of services in a student-centered facility
  • Maintain awareness of applicable state and federal laws and regulations including medical/legal documentation, management of laboratory compliance and hazardous waste disposal
  • Monitor state immunization requirements and insure compliance of entering students
  • Monitor and respond to health issues arising on campus and as reported by the local health department, and Mecklenburg County Health Department, NC Public Health, and CDC.  Interface with the above agencies as needed. Serve as a health information resource for the entire college community creating responses/educational materials for these issues as needed
  • Analyze data pertaining to student health center visits, lab work, etc.; perform laboratory quality control assessments and ensure CLIA compliance
  • Serve on the emergency response team.  Considered as essential personnel and may be needed when the college is closed or in emergency situations
  • Collaborate with colleagues on the development or selection of educational materials for health issues relevant to the college-age population
  • Participate in monthly meeting with Athletics, nutritionists, eating disorder counselor and physician; participate in other interdepartmental initiatives as available and necessary
  • Identify and manage continuing education and professional development resources for staff
  • Participate in panels & presentations for students, and/or families, as available
  • Assist Dean of Students Office and Business Services personnel in evaluating and negotiating the college sponsored student health insurance
  • Maintain office supply inventory and manage accounts payable records

 

Required:

  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in Nursing
  • Current North Carolina license as a Registered Nurse
  • Minimum of seven (7) years clinical nursing experience, with experience in college health, urgent care or family practice/adolescent care strongly preferred
  • Commitment to serving a diverse student population, including students from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds; gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students; and international students
  • Experience with both point of care testing and venipunctures
  • Knowledge of communicable disease issues and general medical knowledge that can be applied to this position
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills for daily correspondence with both internal and external customers
  • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a diverse college community including students, parents, and staff members
  • Current Adult CPR certification or the ability to obtain within the first three months

 

Preferred:

  • Prior management experience in an ambulatory care or college health setting
  • Comprehensive knowledge of trends and current best practices in college student healthcare
  • College-Health Certification would be a plus
