Job Purpose
Serves as assistant to the Laboratory Manager by performing laboratory testing, establishing and maintaining laboratory policy and procedures, as well as reviewing test results and procedures for quality assurance.

Essential Functions
Assists the laboratory manager to perform technical review of all laboratory-generated results, analysis and quality assurance control tests to ensure consistency and accuracy of testing procedures and results. Assists the laboratory manager to prepare or review final laboratory reports. Assists the laboratory manager and analyst to review and maintain all records necessary for laboratory accreditation/certification. Ensures complete and comprehensive communication with Lab Manager and other staff to ensure the effective management of lab procedures. Develop and/or assist the laboratory manager in development of new methodologies. Performs analyses on a wide variety of solid and aqueous matrices using analytical instrumentation. Performs field testing and sampling of external customers as required. Oversees the acquisition of new field and laboratory equipment. Oversees and coordinates laboratory equipment maintenance and calibration. Oversees lab safety procedures and policies and maintains related compliance information. Troubleshoot instrumentation/software problems. Supervise temporary staff and student employees. Communicate effectively with clients and staff. Others duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in chemistry or related field. One year of experience with emphasis on analytical instrumentation and analyses. Knowledge and capability of performing analysis on physical, chemical and biological parameters of water and wastewater using EPA approved and other standard environmental test procedures. Strong problem-solving skills, including identifying data quality issues. Ability to perform analysis on a daily basis, prepare data reports, write analytical procedures, and assume responsibility for other assigned laboratory programs (safety, quality control, laboratory compliance programs, etc.). Sufficient computer skills to efficiently utilize word, spreadsheet, and database programs routinely used in the laboratory. Ability to troubleshoot instrumentation problems and perform corrective action. Ability to make good decisions using sound, professional judgment with minimal supervision. Possess effective written, interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work as part of a team involving staff, clients, and outside agencies.

Preferred Qualifications
Demonstrated capability in the following areas: analytical method development, instrumentation set-up/operation, and environmental analysis experience. Experience with Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, atomic absorption spectrophotometry, and gas chromatography instrumentation; lab safety oversight, and lab personnel supervision.

Work Hours
Typical hours are Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. Additional hours if/when needed.

Compensation and Benefits

Salary Commensurate with education and experience; Administrative Pay Grade AD42.
