Dean, Henson School of Science & Technology

Salisbury University (SU) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean of the Richard A. Henson School of Science & Technology.

Salisbury University is an exceptional public regional comprehensive institution located on Maryland's scenic Eastern Shore midway between the Atlantic Ocean beaches and the Chesapeake Bay and two to three hours from Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Norfolk. Founded in 1925 as a normal school, SU is one of twelve campuses comprising the University System of Maryland, offering 58 bachelor's and master's degrees in the arts, humanities, social sciences, mathematics, sciences, education, health sciences, social work, and business, as well as doctoral degrees in education and nursing practice. In addition to the University's four endowed schools, SU recently launched a College of Health & Human Services and an Honors College. For more than 20 years, SU has been recognized as one of the best regional universities in the North/Northeast by U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review and as a best value campus by Kiplinger's, Forbes, and Money magazines. SU has approximately 8,600 students and 440 full-time instructional faculty and is an institution that values diversity in its faculty, staff, and student body. Salisbury faculty are teacher/scholars who engage students in research, scholarship, and creative endeavors.

In the Henson School of Science & Technology, student-centered teaching and research are enhanced by endowments for student and faculty research and instrumentation; externally-funded research experiences for undergraduates; and campus-wide resources for research, nationally competitive scholarships, and entrepreneurial activity. Henson School teaching and research are also supported through extensive scientific and computational infrastructure (including a new high-performance computing lab), the University's Nanticoke River Center, and adjacency to the recently opened Guerrieri Academic Commons.

Primary Job Duties: This is an outstanding opportunity to become part of a dynamic university leadership team. The Dean of the Henson School is the chief academic and administrative officer of a school with 95 full-time faculty members supporting eight undergraduate majors (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Earth Science, Geography, Mathematics, Physics, and Urban & Regional Planning) and three Master of Science programs (Applied Biology, G.I.S. Management, and Mathematics Education). The Henson Dean reports directly to the Provost and must provide visionary leadership for science, mathematics and technology-related programs as well as effective collaboration with other deans and University leadership to support diversity and inclusion, teacher education programs, general education curriculum, strategic enrollment planning, community engagement, and extramural funding. The dean must support the school's mission of student-centered teaching and research.

Minimum Qualifications: Terminal degree from a regionally accredited or internationally recognized institution in a science, mathematics, or related discipline; teaching and research achievement that would warrant appointment as a full professor in one of the Henson School's departments; excellent interpersonal and communication skills; budget planning and management experience; and a record of progressive leadership in higher education including at least three years of administrative experience at the level of director, department chair or above.

Preferred Experience: Successful efforts to recruit and retain diverse students, faculty and staff; success in external funding including fundraising; new program development and program evaluation; support of faculty appointment, promotion and tenure; strategic enrollment management; and collaboration with other academic units and regional R&D, education, healthcare, and business communities.
