The Department of Psychiatry within the School of Medicine at UC San Diego (http://psychiatry.ucsd.edu/Pages/default.aspx) is committed to academic excellence and diversity within the faculty, staff and student body.
The UCSD Department of Psychiatry seeks to recruit preclinical scientists with experience conducting translational research related to potential novel treatments for alcohol use disorders and other addiction conditions. The successful candidates will participate in experimental design and implementation, data analysis, preparation of scientific reports, publications, and will work with a large scientific team, interacting with faculty, post-doctoral fellows, research coordinators and research analysts as part of a diverse and growing research team. Applying for independent funding (primarily National Institutes of Health) will be highly encouraged. In your cover letter, please describe your experience in one or more of the following areas:

  • Experience with molecular biology techniques, particularly the use of molecular markers, to study neurobiological basis of drug addiction in rodents. Experience performing tasks in mice and/or rats such as intracerebral surgeries, intracerebral delivery of viral vectors, implantation of intravenous catheters or radio transmitters, microinjection, and single-cell whole brain imaging. Experience performing tasks in mouse/rat tissues such as immunocytochemistry, gene expression analysis, slice electrophysiology, and postmortem investigation of brain monoamines.
  • Knowledge of the sophisticated behavioral techniques that are considered preclinical gold standards in the addiction field (operant response, conditioned reinstatement and stress-induced reinstatement), as well as behavioral training and testing techniques/ paradigms to study drug addiction in rodents such as intake, relapse, withdrawal, tolerance, etc.
  • Development and validation of new rodent models of intravenous, oral, and/or vapor self-administration of synthetic stimulants, opioid drugs, amphetamine drugs, cocaine, oxycodone, nicotine, ethanol, and cannabinoids.
  • Human clinical trials of potential medications for protracted abstinence and relapse prevention in alcohol use disorder and other addiction conditions.
  • Genetic mapping analysis, QTL mapping, knowledge of R statistical environment, multivariate analysis of multiple complex traits in genome-wide association studies, development of analytical software.
  • Co-morbidity of drug abuse with neurodegenerative diseases.
  • Lab management.
  • Manuscript and grant writing.

    Applicants must have an M.D., Ph.D., or the equivalent, and at least 3 years postdoctoral experience. Appointment will be at the Assistant, Associate or Full Project Scientist level. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales.
