The W. P. Carey School of Business seeks outstanding applicants for the position of Director of Teaching and Learning with a Clinical open rank appointment for Fall 2019. The Director, working in conjunction with the W. P. Carey School’s Dean, Associate Deans, Chairs/Directors, Teaching Council, faculty, instructional designers and other university partners, will provide leadership for the ongoing improvement and enhancement of faculty teaching and student learning innovation throughout the W. P. Carey School’s curricula. The Director will facilitate the ongoing improvement of all Carey School academic programs through judiciously designed workshops, teaching improvement experiences, training materials (including those for faculty and TA on-boarding), and the ongoing management of teaching and learning resources needed to advance the course quality objectives of the School and University. Expectations are for a strategic, visionary, innovative and collaborative leader who is comfortable working in an environment of rapid change.
The Director will lead the newly created W. P. Carey School’s Teaching Council composed of faculty member liaisons representing each Carey School unit. The Teaching Council is charged with advancing: 1) A discipline-agnostic lens focused on improving graduate and undergraduate business education pedagogies and learning outcomes, 2) Best practices for incorporating learning technologies, 3) The ongoing design and leveraging of teaching quality assessment processes (including peer review) to advance teaching and learning, 4) The identification, validation and sharing of on-site/online/hybrid teaching and learning technologies and pedagogical best practices, and 5) The contributions of Teaching Council liaisons as they champion Council-directed teaching and learning enhancements in their respective units.
The Director will direct the Teaching Council in addressing ad hoc charges from the Dean, for example, establishing AACSB accreditation credentialing standards for scholarly practice, scholarly instructional and instructional practice faculty participation categories. The Director will represent the Teaching Council as directed by the Dean on School- and University-level committees. Other ad hoc Teaching Council charges are expected to include policy setting for managing Honors students’ theses and projects, establishing a culture for conducting use-inspired research, student club faculty advisory role definition and engagement, making recommendations on academic integrity procedures, establishing guidelines for current and new teaching awards, designing policies for teaching and learning advancement and engagement in project-based/experiential course design, development and delivery. The Teaching Council will be an integral partner in School-wide outcomes assessment processes that address both University- and AACSB-level requirements, and it will recommend travel policies for faculty seeking instructional advancement opportunities as well as occasions to advance and disseminate W. P. Carey School teaching and learning achievements to important stakeholder communities, for example, through AACSB conferences and workshops.
The individual selected will exhibit high integrity and will earn the trust of those who represent multiple Carey School units. Due to the nature of the role, it is anticipated that the Director will keep lines of communication open and be highly accessible to faculty.
This position is a full‐time, 9-month academic administrative appointment with a full-time summer paid appointment with a competitive salary. A multi-year appointment may be possible.
