Job Description                   

The Global Locust Initiative (GLI) within the School of Sustainability at Arizona State University invites applications for a full-time, non-tenure track Research Scientist position. The successful candidate will conduct research, seek outside funding, as well as mentor students and visiting scholars.

Essential Functions            

  • Oversee safety and function of the locust research facilities, including training and supervising the lab manager
  • Oversee, coordinate, and find synergies among research projects of postdocs, graduate students, undergraduate students, and visiting scholars
  • Assist with analyzing, interpreting, and publishing data
  • Assist with writing research grants
  • Invite researchers and practitioners to access the locust rearing facilities and oversee visiting scholar research
  • Lead the research and training aspects of GLI workshops
  • Support development of collaborative, cross-sectoral, and interdisciplinary teams, and define new directions for synergistic research

Required Qualifications 

Applicants must have completed their Ph.D. in a relevant field by the start date of the appointment.

Desired Qualifications

  • Conversationally fluent in Spanish and/or French
  • Experience managing locust research facilities
  • Experience facilitating cross-disciplinary discussions and projects
  • Evidence of mentoring undergraduate and graduate students in independent research
  • Evidence of a strong publication record and capacity to lead and design insect research

The Global Locust Initiative, a new research and action program at Arizona State University’ School of Sustainability, is designed to help researchers, international agencies, government organizations, agribusinesses, and farming communities address and mitigate the effects of locust plagues and outbreaks. GLI bridges these sectors and uses laboratory science, field studies, training opportunities and workshops, and novel approaches to integrate what is known—and identify what is not known—to create interventions that reduce the frequency and impacts of locust plagues. The School of Sustainability conducts research, education, and problem-solving related to sustainability, with a special focus on urban environments. (see http://schoolofsustainability.asu.edu).
