Rappahannock Community College, a two-campus institution serving a rural 12-county area in the Chesapeake Bay region of Virginia, seeks applicants for the following faculty-ranked teaching position in English (F0010). This position is a nine-month appointment with an excellent benefits package; salary commensurate with education and experience but no less than $43,776. Position begins August 16, 2019.

 

The College desires candidates with a commitment to the community college mission and experience working in a diverse student population, including adult learners and at-risk students. The successful candidate will be committed to academic excellence, continuous improvement through professional development, assessment, program and course development, and creating a collegial environment of civility, collaboration and open communication. The college strives for a faculty of content experts who are also knowledgeable about best practices, innovative strategies, and instructional technologies that support teaching and learning. Position requires outreach and service to the college community (developing partnerships, academic advising, and committee work and faculty governance) along with the ability to teach 15 credits per semester. Finalists will be asked to perform a teaching demonstration.

 

Duties and responsibilities will primarily include teaching courses in English from developmental reading and writing through college composition and literature. Other duties will include, but are not limited to facilitating student learning through in class and out of class activities; maintaining up to date knowledge in English Composition and Literature, trends in community college and English education; and teaching using a variety of delivery systems including interactive video, web, and other electronic media. Teaching faculty will advise students, adopt textbooks, draft course syllabi in collaboration with colleagues, develop new courses, mentor part-time and dual enrollment faculty, and participate in college governance committees. Teaching assignments and schedule may include day and evening assignments, cross-campus or off-campus assignments, and teaching concurrently enrolled high school students.

 

Qualifications Required: Master's degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning with 18 graduate semester hours in English. Must meet requirements to teach both composition and literature. Minimum standards are 3 graduate credits in Composition Theory or 6 credits in teaching composition practicum and 6 graduate credits of literature. The remaining graduate credits can be in appropriate English content. Candidates should possess sufficient technology skills to work productively in an organization that utilizes significant information and instructional technology resources.

Qualifications Preferred: Master's or earned doctorate in English. Experience teaching college level English, and using distance-learning modalities. Demonstrated student learning and student success in courses taught.
