CIO/Vice President of Information Technology

Position Title: CIO/Vice President of Information Technology

Department: Information Technology

Location: Marist College main campus, Poughkeepsie, NY

Position Description: Heller Search has been retained to identify and recruit an experienced and highly qualified CIO/Vice President of Information Technology.

Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Marist College seeks a dynamic and entrepreneurial thought leader who will oversee all technology initiatives in support of both academic and administrative operations. A collaborative, innovative and influential leader, the CIO/VP will have a vision of how leading-edge technology can transform the student and educational experience.

Marist, ranked 8th best and 2nd most innovative in the U.S. News and World Report Regional University/North, is an institution increasing the quality of its educational offerings across the undergraduate and graduate portfolio, matching the qualities of an elite undergraduate institution with the dynamism of a larger research university. The new CIO/VP will have an important role in helping to shape the future of that portfolio, and in launching a number of new initiatives that extend well into the future success of the College.

Among these are:
  • Advancing the successful operation and innovation across all areas of the academic, administrative, and strategic portfolio of Marist College's world class technology environment.
  • Significantly contributing to the launch of the new Marist Health Quest School of Medicine, whose vision is to leverage technologies such as artificial intelligence to educate the next generation of physicians for the region and beyond.
  • Advancing the College's academic learning platform for adult, graduate and corporate education with an online and blended learning portfolio that will be integral to the launch of the new Marist Executive Center at 420 5th Avenue in Manhattan.
  • Technical oversight of the Marist-IBM Joint Study program, a 30-year research partnership with IBM that has explored and developed systems integration from enterprise systems management to cloud services to analytics and now will engage in the development of augmented/artificial intelligence across selected curricula.
  • Supervision and responsibility for a cloud services, incubation, and innovation portfolio that oversees the hosting of services (website and ERP systems) across several industries, including higher education.
  • Relocation of IT operations to a state-of-the-art facility that will incorporate IT operations, cloud services, innovation and incubation services, and a planned green data center.

Key Responsibilities: Oversee the planning, implementation, management, and direction of all technology initiatives in support of both academic and administrative operations.
  • Advise senior leadership and the campus community on emerging information technologies.
  • Lead a dedicated and highly-motivated team of approximately 80 professionals in the areas of: business development and cloud services, digital education, enterprise computing, systems and technology, telecommunications and networking, and web and interface innovation.
  • Oversee the management and maintenance of systems and processes according to acceptable industry standards including auditability, accountability, and systems assurance.
  • Maintain and enhance innovation partnerships, including joint studies.
  • Expand entrepreneurial and research portfolio of cloud services, analytics, and incubation.
  • Leverage and promote technology to distinguish the reputation of Marist.
  • Position Marist on the leading-edge of cognitive assisted education and partnerships.
  • Engage meaningfully with the broader technology community through executive and board leadership.
  • Provide leadership and vision for assessing technology needs and the formulation of strategies to achieve integrated, efficient and cost-effective technology solutions for the College.
  • The successful candidate will have broad knowledge of emerging industry trends, including innovative applications of instructional technology and digital communications. As a member of the President's Cabinet, the VP/CIO will leverage their expertise to inform strategic decisions in all academic and operational areas.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications:
  • 15 years + IT executive leadership positions.
  • BS/BA Technology/Engineering, advanced degree desired.
  • Experience in higher education, high-tech, or healthcare is desirable.
  • Visionary leadership and broad knowledge of technology including network infrastructure, cloud-based applications, security, business and ERP applications.
  • Results oriented leader with a track record of innovation and creativity.
  • Clear vision of the role that technology will play in the College's future.
  • Collaborative, entrepreneurial leader who is willing to experiment, take risks, and prototype new ideas to keep pace with the rapidly changing education landscape.
  • The ability to develop and communicate an IT vision that inspires and motivates IT staff and aligns to the College's strategy.
  • Thorough understanding of technology trends, applications, current developments and new directions.
  • Strategic thinker who will enable students to have a world-class educational experience.
  • Ability to develop and promote collaboration around a shared vision for the use of information technology at the College and its various ventures.
  • Expertise to develop and successfully execute short-term, long-range, and strategic IT plans that enable the College's overall strategic direction.
  • Deep understanding of current and emerging technologies; comfortable with the rapid pace of change and disruption in technology and ability to harness those changes to transform the student experience.
  • Experience with GDPR and privacy regulations.
  • Ability to prioritize competing needs related to technology and information systems.
  • Effective management of operational, capital, and other financial resources.
  • Ability to analyze and resolve complex issues, both logical and interpersonal.
  • Skill set to conduct and communicate cost-benefit and return-on-investment analyses.
  • Capability to manage and prioritize multiple projects, which includes being able to define and articulate the impact of projects on resources and workload.
  • Fluency to translate IT plans, business processes and information needs between IT professionals and users and decision makers.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Management skill to supervise and develop technical teams through coaching, mentoring, skill building and continual performance feedback.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and execute a strategic people plan that ensures that the right people are in the right roles at the right time and that employees are highly engaged and satisfied.
  • Acumen to successfully manage IT services vendors, software providers and contractors.
  • Outstanding judgment, ability to assess and understand the motivations and needs of others, and ability to balance self-reliance with team dynamics.
