Clinical Associate/Full Professor & Assistant Dean

The Hainan University-Arizona State University Joint International Tourism College (HAITC) is seeking one full-time, 12-month clinical (associate or full) professor to also serve as assistant dean. Hainan University (HNU) is a comprehensive provincial university in Haikou, Hainan. It is one of the “211 Project” key universities. HAITC is an innovative joint college and the first domestic Sino-foreign cooperative tourism institution approve by China’s Ministry of Education. Currently offering three dual degree programs, the college began in Fall 2017 and now hosts over 500 students. Courses are taught by both HNU and ASU faculty.

Job Responsibilities

In collaboration with the HAITC and ASU Deans and Vice Deans, develops, plans and implements strategies to maintain and continually improve the quality efforts of ASU-HNU collaboration and student services, promoting the college’s visibility and educational offerings. Serves as a liaison for undergraduate programs between ASU and HNU. Serves as an expert and resource to the Deans and Vice Deans with regards to ASU-HNU collaboration and HAITC student services. Counsels and confers with students within HAITC’s programs of study; provides program procedures, policies, goals and objectives, technical guidance and problem resolution. Coordinates and provides support to enrolled students, such as graduation processing, petitioning, withdrawals, program documentation, computer accounts, information sessions, and student orientation. Oversees and enforces ASU and Watts College policies and procedures.

As a faculty member, the successful candidate will be expected to teach up to two courses per year and assist with two 1 credit introductory classes at the undergraduate level, deliver excellent in-class instruction at the undergraduate level and participate in service activities for the college, profession and community. The appointment will begin with a one week orientation at ASU’s Downtown Phoenix campus toward the end of August 2019.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned master’s degree in tourism management, hospitality, recreation, leisure studies, geography, business, or a closely related field from an accredited institution at the time of appointment
  • At a minimum two years of university administrative experience
  • Undergraduate teaching experience
  • Direct knowledge of the tourism and hospitality industry
  • Ability to work with culturally-diverse populations
  • For Associate level: at least 6 years of academic experience including 2 years of administrative experience
  • For Full level: at least 10 years of academic experience including 2 years of administrative experience

Desired Qualifications

  • Doctorate in a closely aligned field
  • Experience in student services administration
  • Preference will also be given to applicants with: 1) experience teaching undergraduate tourism related classes; 2) experience working in the tourism industry; 3) professional engagement with students in and out of the classroom; 4) and expertise in one or more specialties such as introduction to tourism, sustainable tourism, tourism marketing and management, or leadership and professional development
  • Ability to verbally communicate in Mandarin is highly desirable
