About the Department

The San Diego State University Department of Geological Sciences is composed of two programs, the Geological Sciences Program (GSP) and the Environmental Science Program (ESP). The GSP is the fifth oldest program in California and has solid traditions in excellence in education and research. The GSP faculty is composed of individuals who teach and conduct research related to theoretical seismology, neotectonics, marine/coastal geology, sedimentology, stratigraphy, Quaternary geology, deep earth geophysics, near surface geophysics, hydrology, geochemistry and structural geology. The ESP program was added to the Department in Fall 2017 and has growing interdisciplinary expertise in aspects of earth systems, water, climate and coupled human-earth interactions. The Department has a small, but vibrant community of undergraduate students (~85 GSP & ~130 ESP majors), approximately 20 Geology MS students and 10 PhD students in the Joint Doctoral Program in Geophysics with Scripps Institute of Oceanography at UCSD.

The ESP is an interdisciplinary program that is focused on a systems approach to environmental science. Core courses are offered through the Department of Geological Sciences and students are free to specialize their approach by drawing on courses offered throughout the University that support one or more of the key systems, including: 1) Water, 2) Earth, 3) Climate, 4) Anthropogenically Altered and 5) Systems Analysis. The curriculum is currently undergoing revision and new courses as well as systems tracks will be added based on the focus and input of the candidate.
