Curator of Exhibits and Engagement


Salisbury University (SU) is seeking creative and dynamic applicants for the position of Curator of Exhibits and Engagement. This position will play a key role in creating SU Libraries exhibits and engaging in academic and community outreach. This is a full-time, permanent status track library faculty position reporting to the Director of the Nabb Research Center for Delmarva History and Culture and University Special Collections.

Located in the new state-of-the-art library the Guerrieri Academic Commons, the Nabb Center is a regional history center that also serves as SU's university archives and special collections. The building features both changing and permanent exhibit spaces and is the academic hub of campus. The Nabb Center actively engages faculty and students, hosting more than 130 classes in the last academic year and enjoys strong community support.

Primary Job Duties: Create exhibits and work with students and faculty to turn some of the exhibit areas into "exhibit labs" where students can create exhibits under the position's guidance. Develop related programming and special projects that engage the campus and lower Eastern Shore community. A secondary duty is to manage the artifact collections of the Nabb Center. As a member of the Nabb Center staff, participate in regular duties such as: working with classes and users in the reading room; helping with staff events; supervising interns and volunteers; and, other similar activities. Serve on committees and task forces and be active professionally.

Minimum Qualifications: Master's degree in museum studies or public history or related field and three years of experience curating exhibits in a history-related setting; knowledge of professional museum standards and practices; and knowledge of American history. Must be detail-oriented and have excellent interpersonal, organization and planning, prioritization, problem-solving, time management, and oral and written communication skills. Also must be flexible and possess the ability to successfully handle multiple tasks/projects simultaneously and work well under pressure, independently, and in a team-oriented environment. Must be committed to contributing to a culturally diverse educational and work environment. Must be able to lift up to forty (40) pounds, bend to handle materials on lower shelves and climb a ladder to handle materials on high shelves.

Preferred Qualifications: Teaching experience, programming, experience, and experience supervising students and volunteers is preferred. Experience with digital photo editing, online exhibit software such as Omeka, and collection software such as PastPerfect or The Museum System (TMS).
