Job Description:

The director will be responsible for original content development and production, program acquisitions and all scheduling for Arizona PBS, one of the nation’s largest public media outlets serving the No. 12 market in the U.S. with four TV channels and a growing digital platform. Reporting to the general manager, s/he will be a part an integral part of the senior leadership team.  The director has oversight of the station’s editorial and aesthetic presence on air and online. The position oversees three critical areas: program production, program acquisition and program scheduling.

Essential Duties:

In designing and implementing the strategic direction for the station’s overall content areas, the director plans and reviews the activities and operations of the department. In collaboration with fellow station leaders, s/he identifies issues which may impact the department, resolves problems affecting the department and directs measures to improve the effectiveness and efficiency. This position works in close collaboration with the news and public affairs team and develops long- and short-range goals to strategically align the department with overall goals of the station. This leader also interfaces with the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at Arizona State University, which operates Arizona PBS, to develop new and innovative programming for air and online. 

 

Original Content Creation

 

A key priority for Arizona PBS is the development of original content for web as well as broadcast. The director will oversee the creative development of original productions for these platforms, working in close collaboration with the revenue, audience research, production/operations and marketing divisions. 

 

Scheduling

 

The director works in collaboration with an Arizona PBS consultant to set the broadcast schedules for the four Arizona PBS channels and coordinates with the web team to program the Arizona PBS website and digital properties such as Facebook and Instagram.

 

Program Acquisition

 

In designing the schedule, the director is charged with developing new audiences. This means working in collaboration with the audience research team to acquire programming that not only augments the national PBS schedule, but helps expand the audience demographics and viewership/online users.

 

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in a field appropriate to the area of assignment AND eight (8) years of related administrative experience, which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Twelve (12) years of related administrative experience, which includes five (5) years of supervisory experience; OR, Any equivalent combination of education and/or experience from which comparable knowledge, skills and abilities have been achieved.

Working Environment:

Activities are performed in an environmentally controlled office setting subject to extended periods of sitting, keyboarding and manipulating a computer mouse; required to stand for varying lengths of time and walk moderate distances to perform work.Frequent bending, reaching, lifting, pushing and pulling up to 25 pounds.Regular activities require ability to quickly change priorities, which may include and/or are subject to resolution of conflicts.May be required to perform tasks in the field within and/or across University campuses.Ability to clearly communicate verbally, read, write, see and hear to perform essential functions.
