Director of Choral Studies

Description
San Diego State University: Director of Choral Studies. Full-time, tenure-track appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor. Position appointment begins August 2019.

POSITION DESCRIPTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The successful candidate will be responsible for the artistic development and administration of all aspects of the San Diego State University choral program. Responsibilities will include conducting chamber and large choral ensembles; instructing undergraduate and graduate conducting and choral literature; advising; and other teaching duties that match the candidate's qualifications and background, as well as the School of Music and Dance's programmatic needs. The Director of Choral Studies will be expected to provide leadership in creating strong relationships with public school, community college, university, and choral professionals throughout the San Diego region, the state, and the nation. The successful candidate will be expected to recruit outstanding students to SDSU's voice, opera, conducting, and other vocal arts programs. Active and sustained involvement in professional growth beyond the university is expected, as is participation in appropriate faculty committees and governance. The Director of Choral Studies will maintain effective and collaborative relationships with studio, opera, music education, and ensemble conducting colleagues.

QUALIFICATIONS:

A terminal degree (doctorate) in music is preferred. Candidates with a Master degree in in an appropriate field of music will be considered if combined with evidence of extensive, professional choral experience and accomplishment. The successful candidate will possess the highest artistic abilities, exemplary choral conducting skills, and evidence of or potential for successful choral teaching in a university setting. Applicants are expected to exhibit a comprehensive and current knowledge of diverse choral repertoire, effective rehearsal techniques, and strong pedagogical skills. A record of or potential for successful program building, outstanding skills in recruiting and retaining undergraduate and graduate students, demonstrated abilities as an adjudicator and/or clinician, and superior administrative skills is expected. Experience working with K-12 music programs and directing middle school or high school vocal ensembles is preferred.

RANK AND SALARY:

Appointment will be at the rank of assistant professor and the salary will be nationally competitive, based on the successful candidate's qualifications.
