Assistant Provost for Educational Innovation and Enhancement

Summary/Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Utilizing the guiding philosophy of "One University," this position will provide strategic leadership in educational innovation and enhancement, and will oversee the cluster of educational support units, to include Library, Simulation Center, Center for Educational Enhancement, and Continued Medical Education. It is expected that the position will bring about exciting, cutting edge educational innovation initiatives and programs, and will support academic enhancement for faculty and students. Providing services for all participants in the academic enterprise - students, faculty and staff - this position will lead boldly into the future of health sciences education, assessing the viability of programs and educational initiatives, and ensuring academic support services are available and efficient. This position will develop and implement programs enhancing teaching and learning, educational research, instructional design, course delivery and assess the utility of innovative educational tools and technology. This position will promote a culture of educational innovation, enhancement and assessment to provide competitive advantage to the institution and its programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Alignment - Responsible for aligning initiatives, priorities and actions with the Board of Trustees' and President's vision for the future of DMU and alignment with the DMU's academic enterprise strategic direction as formulated by the Provost.
  • Strategic Visioning - Responsible for designing, implementing and promoting initiatives in educational innovation and enhancement for all DMU programs.
  • Strategic Leadership - Will create, coordinate and facilitate new and emerging academic initiatives and projects that cut across academic and academic support units, to promote educational innovation and enhancement.
  • Oversees the Library, the Simulation Center, the Center for Educational Enhancement and Continued Medical Education units.
  • Programming Integrity and Vitality - Ensures that the initiatives and programs offered by the units this position oversees are seamlessly and intrinsically aligned in pursuit of educational excellence, innovation and enhancement, and are also aligned with the academic strategic direction for DMU as formulated within the DMU Strategic Plan and by the Provost. Reviews and monitors the vitality of academic programs.
  • Research - Design and implement research and scholarly activities aiming to develop and deploy the scholarship of education, including teaching, learning and assessment.
  • Faculty/Staff Development - Responsible for developing programs and initiatives that support educational innovation and enhancement of faculty and staff skills in teaching, program and course development, assessment and evaluation, and educational scholarship.
  • Educational Excellence - Leads the development and implementation of programs that support student learning, offer a wide range of educational support services for students and faculty, and enhance the quality of DMU graduates.
  • Culture of Educational Innovation, Enhancement and Assessment - Supports the development of campus culture that values educational innovation, enhancement and assessment.
  • Identifies and monitors key performance indicators for the supervised units, and institution-wide educational innovation and enhancement.
  • Inter-Professional Education - Working with the DMU College Deans, Department Chairs, and Program and Course Directors, designs and implements inter-professional educational initiatives.
  • Collaboration and Coordination - Designs, implements, supports, leads and collaborates, as applicable, with the members of the Provost's Academic Council, to further, promote and deploy programs in academic excellence, innovation and enhancement, aiming to fulfill strategic and accreditation expectations, as well as bring about cutting-edge educational innovation.
  • Data-driven Management - Utilize in unit management and provide to the Provost appropriate and accurate data-based evidence to support relevant decision making.
  • Fiscal Management - Responsible for the fiscal viability of the units that the position oversees. Advises the Provost about priorities for resource allocation within the supervised units. Consulting with and responsible to the Provost, the position will oversee the development and management of the units' budgets.
  • Compliance - Ensure compliance with applicable academic, administrative, budgetary and personnel policies and procedures.
  • Advisor to the Provost - Will advise, recommend and promote programs and initiatives that will further educational excellence, inter-collegiate and inter-departmental collaboration and facilitate matters of interest to the Provost, and will work to ensure that Provost's academic agenda and initiatives are realized.
  • Provide oversight and guidance to special projects or initiatives as determined by the Provost. Monitor and follow progress and ensure that appropriate follow-up actions are taken and to ensure timely and effective completion.
  • Participate in and successfully complete all University required training including, but not limited to discrimination/harassment and code of conduct.
  • Performs other job-related duties as assigned.


Supervisory Responsibilities:

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position has oversight of the Library Director, Simulation Center Director, Director of the Center for Educational Enhancement and the CME Director. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include but are not limited to interviewing and/or motivating and/or training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; providing salary recommendations; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications/Education and/or Experience:

QUALIFICATIONS To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
  • Earned Terminal Degree (e.g., PhD, EdD, DO, MD, DPT, etc.) from a regionally and/or professionally accredited institution; Doctoral degrees in Education, Assessment or the Health Sciences preferred. A Terminal Degree in the disciplines taught within DMU preferred.
  • Three years of full-time experience in academic leadership at the department, college or university level. Experience at the university level preferred.
  • Documented experience with faculty development and student educational support.
  • Documented experience with educational research (e.g., educational research publications and/or presentations)
  • Documented experience with teaching and/or curriculum/course development at the graduate level or in a health professions program.
  • Evidence of progressively responsible academic leadership experience highly desired.
  • Passion for a high standard in academic excellence highly desired.

  • Interest in and ability to understand, pilot-use and assess the applicability of emerging educational technology innovations, as needed in leading educational innovation.
  • Using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions and/or conclusions to problems.
  • Identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
  • Selecting and using training/instructional methods and procedures appropriate for the situation when learning or teaching new knowledge.
  • Extensive and detailed knowledge of University policies and procedures, including educational, administrative, budgetary and personnel.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • Ability to travel locally & nationally up to 10 percent of time as required.
  • Work schedule may necessitate working after hours and on weekends.
