Assistant Professor: School Counseling

Description
The Department of Counseling and School Psychology at SDSU is seeking a colleague to join us in the School Counseling Program to contribute to our vision of preparing school counselors leaders, advocates and systems change agents within our diverse schools and communities. Our mission supports the development of skills in the design, development, implementation and evaluation of comprehensive school counseling programs to ensure that every student receives developmentally appropriate competencies in academic, career and personal/social development.

SDSU's School Counselors become professional student advocates who promote equity and access to rigorous educational opportunities for every student and who work to prevent and remove barriers to learning. Our graduates develop themselves as culturally-sustaining leaders in educational transformation and social justice in the schools and communities they serve.

Required Quali cations:


  • Doctorate in counselor education (preference for specialty preparation in school counseling), educational leadership, or related eld of study
  • School Counseling Credential
  • Established record of research or clear research agenda
  • Successful record of teaching as a faculty member, graduate teaching assistant, or doctoral candidate within a counselor education or related program
  • Experience in a combination of the areas of teaching responsibilities (see a-h listed below)
  • Experience with school counselors in eld-based, collaborative, ethnically and linguistically diverse school-based programs
  • A strong framework and commitment to working for social justice and equity in schools and the community contexts
  • Experience with student and systems advocacy and preparing school counselors as culturally sustaining leaders
  • Experience as a professional school counselor or educational leader in a K-12 school

    Strongly Preferred Attributes:


    • Expertise in Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy, Relationship Centered Schools, and Critical Race Theory
    • Experience with or interest in directing a school counseling program
    • Experience with or interest in providing practicum and eldwork supervision in school counseling
    • Experience with accreditation policies, procedures and agencies
    • Experience as a collaborative leader in a department setting (school or university)
    • Experience using technology as a tool for teaching and learning, course development, evaluation, and instructional delivery
    • Experience in college/career readiness (e.g. secondary counseling, nancial aid, transition and matriculation success)
    • Grant writing skills and/or record of external funding
    • An interest in contributing to the development of a doctoral program

      Major Responsibilities


      • Teaching in some combination of the following: (a) Professional Seminar in School Counselor; (b) The Achievement Gap: Leadership, Advocacy and Systemic Change; (c) Theory and Process of Group Counseling; (d) Policy, Politics, Law and Ethics for School Counselor's; (e) Consultation with Parents and Teachers for School Counselors; (f) Fieldwork Supervision in School Counseling; (g) Learning, Achievement and Instruction; and (h) College Planning and Career Development P-16
      • Continuous scholarship-research consistent with the mission and vision of the program, department and college
      • Program service through student recruitment, selection, advisement, and mentoring; collaborate in program governance and development of doctoral program.

        In addition, the College of Education prefers candidates with experience in some or all of the following areas: (a) working with families and communities; (b) assessment of student learning outcomes and program evaluation; (c) interdisciplinary collaborations; (d) international programs; and (e) partnerships with the eld of practice.

        The School Counseling Program is housed in the Department of Counseling and School Psychology, which also houses four other graduate programs (School Psychology, Marriage & Family Therapy, Community Based Block: Multicultural Community Counseling and Social Justice Education, and Education with concentration in Counseling) and one undergraduate minor program (Counseling & Social Change). All department programs specialize in e ective work across cultures, systemic approaches, and responses that meet the urgent human relationship needs of our time.
