Organismal Physiologist or Zooplankton Ecologist/Curator - Associate Professor

Organismal Physiologist or Zooplankton Ecologist/Curator - Associate Professor

University of California, San Diego

Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at the University of California San Diego (UCSD) seeks outstanding candidates for a position to fill one of two roles: 1) Organismal Physiologist, or 2) Zooplankton Ecologist/Curator, at Associate Professor rank.

Organismal Physiologist: We invite applicants focusing on the biochemical, cellular, and/or organismal physiology of eukaryotic marine organisms. We seek candidates whose research takes innovative approaches to address fundamental questions, including, but not limited to, comparative physiology, cellular physiology, ecological physiology, physiology of mutualism/parasitism, or neurophysiology of marine organisms. Candidates with research programs that address applied topics, including climate change, aquaculture, or environmental toxicology are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will be expected to teach courses on marine biochemistry and/or physiology at the undergraduate and graduate levels. The successful candidate will have the ability to interact with additional colleagues at other departments within the large and dynamic UCSD campus.

Zooplankton Ecologist/Curator: We invite applicants who conduct integrative, process-focused, sea-going research on the ecology of zooplankton. Ecological research areas of interest could include, but are not limited to, community response to environmental variability, production transfer to higher trophic levels, mechanisms and feedbacks of biological control, and the functioning of the biological carbon pump. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to interact with large scale interdisciplinary SIO field research programs, including the California Current Ecosystem-LTER and California Cooperative Oceanic Fisheries Investigations (CalCOFI). The ideal candidate will also have the zoological expertise and desire to teach a core graduate course on zooplankton diversity and to serve as the faculty Curator of the SIO Pelagic Invertebrate Collection (PIC). The PIC is among the world's preeminent collections of marine zooplankton, with more than 140,000 whole zooplankton samples, including the CalCOFI zooplankton time series, which has surveyed the California Current since 1949. The faculty Curator would oversee the PIC's full-time collection manager, actively use the collection in their research and teaching, and devote time to raising financial support for the collection.

Candidates will be evaluated on evidence for ability to establish a vigorous research program and provide intellectual leadership in their field, acquire extramural funds, teach and mentor graduate students, teach in the marine biology undergraduate major, collegiality, and service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and based on University of California pay scales. A Ph.D., or equivalent degree, in a relevant field is required at the time of application. For full consideration, please apply by January 31, 2019 via https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/apply/JPF01958
