Assistant Director, Student Life & Development

Job Summary

The Department of Student Life and Development at Columbus State University is accepting applications for an Assistant Director. Under the supervision of the Director, this position will be responsible for the planning, development, and successful implementation of a comprehensive Orientation program; Parent & Family program; collaboration with the Transformative Learning Initiative/K-20 Partnership; and providing vision, leadership, and administrative oversight for the office and campus initiatives. This position will directly advise a team of student leaders and work with various campus stakeholders to ensure the successful execution of Orientation as a campus-wide initiative. In support of campus initiatives, this position will also assist in the implementation of Camp P.R.O.W.L and the Transformative Learning Initiative/K-20 Partnership and will directly supervise professional staff members who oversee programmatic areas to include Leadership & Special Events and Community Outreach.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include but are not limited to: developing rigorous and engaging orientation programs that encompass the diverse make-up of the student body (e.g. First-year, non-traditional, online, transfer, etc.) and continually research best practices to develop an orientation program to be modeled regionally and nationally; implementing a comprehensive orientation program to include, but not limited to, the communication, registration, assessment, and planning; and managing a highly structured orientation team through proactive and engaging training programs, team building exercises, retreat, and leadership course. Training for the orientation team should focus on building cohesiveness among the members as well as professional leadership and create a professionally, energetic environment that encourages future recruitment of new members.

Other responsibilities will include: serving in a collaborative role to plan (includes all logistical aspects of planning, to include space, camp site, reservations, transportation, logistics, and communication) and implement Camp P.R.O.W.L., a transformational leadership program that incorporates student development activities, teambuilding, and other identified learning outcomes for incoming first-year students; assisting the Director with departmental administrative components to include but not limited to, departmental assessment initiatives and the supervision and training of all professional and paraprofessional staff members; managing a Parent & Family program that encompasses interaction with parents, the Parent Connection (newsletter), Parent & Family Days, and any additional events or related programs to provide information and connection for parents and families on campus; collaborating with all aspects of various programmatic areas (e.g. TLI, Diversity, Leadership, Student Activities, Greek Life, etc.); serving on appropriate university committees and governing boards; working closely with students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders to collaborate on programmatic initiatives designed to capture the college student experience; and all other related duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include a Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Higher Education Administration, Student Affairs, Educational Policy, or other closely related field; evidence of increasing levels of responsibility in both supervisory and budgetary management experiences; experience working closely with students from diverse backgrounds within higher education settings; extensive experience initiating, planning, implementing, and evaluating episodic and ongoing programmatic efforts; experience developing and implementing strategic planning and outcome-driven assessment efforts; experience working collaboratively with students, faculty, staff, and external stakeholders in a wide variety of university initiatives and committees; experience in developing and implementing student-driven programmatic efforts; and an extensive display of understanding college student development, student development theoretical frameworks, college student personnel, organizational structure in higher education, and facilities management.

The successful candidate should also possess the ability to plan, develop and implement programs and activities related to orientation initiatives in conjunction with campus stakeholders, administration, faculty, and staff; possess the ability to effectively research other university, state-wide, or institutional policies and procedures and best practices; have the ability to successfully lead the orientation team through training, mentorship, and position oversight; exceptional oral and written communication skills; a demonstrated ability to be a team player and be willing to communicate openly, follow policies and procedures, and commit to campus-wide missions and goals; possess strong organizational skills; display a strong ability to multi-task; the ability to manage and maintain budget and fiscal responsibilities; the ability to collect, analyze, disseminate, and report data as well as provide current and future trends regarding student development; the ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from internal and external stakeholders and constituencies; an ability to direct such activities as maintenance requests, supply needs, repairs, mailings, and file management; and the ability to manage and coordinate other duties as assigned.

Proposed Salary

The salary for this position is $48,000 annualized.
