Job Description
The School of Sustainability (SOS) at Arizona State University seeks full-time, non-tenure track Ph.D. (or ABD), MA, or MS level instructors to teach up to 10 courses per year.
Areas of specialization may include (but not necessarily limited to):
- Quantitative approaches to sustainability science (mathematics including calculus, probability and modeling)
- Food systems and sustainability
- Energy science and policy
- Water policy
- Business and sustainability
- Sustainability strategy and/or leadership
- Sustainability communications
- Systems thinking
- International sustainable development
- Ecosystems and environmental sustainability
- Urban sustainability/sustainable cities
- Future thinking and strategy
- Sustainability and environmental economics
- Society and sustainability
- Introduction to sustainability
- Policy and governance for sustainable development
These positions are for the 2019-2020 academic year, with the possibility of continuing appointment depending on performance and teaching needs of the school. While some of these courses may be offered in person, most are likely to be online courses. SOS online courses are generally delivered in the 8-week half-semester format of Sessions A and B. Please refer to the ASU Academic Calendar for details on dates and timing.
Instructors of in-person courses are required to hold weekly office hours on campus, respond promptly to emails, online inquiries, and assignments. Those who teach fully online courses are not required to hold in-person office hours or be present on campus at any time. They are required to respond to all student and staff emails within forty-eight (48) hours and grade all assignments within a week’s time. Weekends are especially important times to check for email from online students.
General Information
Instructors are hired in fiscal year, benefits-eligible positions. Instructors may teach no more than 18 credits per semester and the number of credits is contingent upon unit needs, funding, and sufficient enrollment. Salary depends on experience, qualifications, and assigned teaching load.
Essential Functions
Teach School of Sustainability courses, mostly online 8-week courses. Main responsibilities include becoming familiar with the syllabus, reading all course readings in advance, viewing and becoming familiar with all video lectures and class materials, conducting discussions in online forums, grading assignments and exams, and assigning final grades for the course.
Required Qualifications
- A Ph.D. (or ABD) or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline
- At least three (3) months of teaching experience in higher education
- Demonstrate subject matter expertise in the area of the course topic
- Ability to be online daily during the course and respond to student questions within 48 hours
Desired Qualifications
- Background in Sustainability science or practice
- Familiarity with teaching online
