Associate Director and Professor

Associate Director and Professor in the School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences

The School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences (SMNS) in the New College of Interdisciplinary Arts & Sciences at Arizona State University (ASU) invites applications for a full-time, benefits-eligible, Associate or Full Professor with an administrative assignment as Associate Director to the school. This is an opportunity to take a leadership role in a rapidly growing School; one embedded in the truly interdisciplinary and innovative environment of New College. The successful applicant will be expected to work with the Director to provide administrative vision, leadership, and management for the School; to foster and contribute to the School’s interdisciplinary teaching and research missions; to encourage and support undergraduate research in the School and develop innovative ways to engage a broad demographic of students in faculty research; to develop new programs and initiatives both with the community and in the School; to grow the student body and help develop innovative methods for student teaching, learning, and retention; to coordinate efforts to acquire research funding that draws upon the diverse capabilities of SMNS faculty; and to engage in research and teaching that complement and strengthen current offerings and emphases in SMNS.

The School of Mathematical and Natural Sciences currently offers Bachelor of Science (B.S.) degrees in Applied Computing, Applied Mathematics, Biology, Environmental Science, Forensic Science, Pharmacology/Toxicology, Biotechnology & Bioenterprise, and Statistics. It is presently developing two new Masters Programs. The School has added three new tenure-track faculty since 2017, with two new tenure-track /tenured faculty approved this year. It now seeks an Associate Director to work with the Director in guiding it through its next phase of expansion and innovation around these existing programs as well as develop new initiatives and new programs.

Required Qualifications: The successful candidate must have: a) a Ph.D. in a field related to the academic programs currently within the School; b) a research record of excellence warranting appointment as an Associate or Full Professor with Tenure at ASU; c) a strong, ongoing program of research and publication; and d) demonstrated commitment to teaching and mentoring students.

Desired Qualifications: a) an externally-funded research program in an area of expertise that complements existing strengths and needs of the School; b) the ability to promote new and existing interdisciplinary collaborations in research and teaching; c) enthusiasm for developing new initiatives, new programs, and/ or new curriculum; d) evidence of leadership experience in an interdisciplinary program or Center, and/or administrative experience within a School, Department or College; e) demonstrated commitment to working successfully with a diverse student population, including students with disabilities and first generation, non-traditional, low income, and underrepresented minority students, etc.; f) enthusiasm for the potential to have a large impact on undergraduate education through working with a broad demographic of students; and, g) an appropriate record of university and professional service.
