African American and African Diaspora History

 

The African and African American Studies Program in the School of Social Transformation (SST) seeks applications for a full-time tenure-eligible position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The anticipated start date is fall 2019. We seek a historian of African Diaspora Studies with a concentration in African American History. Scholars of Comparative African Diaspora History, Transatlantic Slavery, African American Political History, Social Movements, and African American Cultural History are also encouraged to apply. Candidates must have the ability to teach a broad range of classes in African American and African Diaspora History to a diverse student population.

 

The School of Social Transformation is in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) and houses African and African American Studies, Asian Pacific American Studies, Justice Studies & Social Inquiry, Social and Cultural Pedagogy, Women’s & Gender Studies and the Center for American Indian Education. SST is an innovative interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary unit that places just solutions to societal challenges at the center of its scholarship and teaching endeavors. SST champions the ASU Charter which envisions a New American University that measures itself “not by whom it excludes but by whom it includes and how well they succeed.” The faculty of SST work in the humanities, social sciences and interdisciplinary fields (including creative arts), and they are distinguished nationally and internationally for their scholarship and creative endeavors. The faculty is committed to training students to think in more complex ways about race, ethnicity, gender, class, sexuality, social and economic justice, immigration status, and labor; to be accountable to the communities with which they engage; and to engage social transformation on the local, national and global levels. Located in Arizona, SST addresses many of the demographic changes and social issues that reflect the challenges that we face nationally and internationally thereby highlighting the relevance of our school’s mission as well as the ASU Charter.

 

 

Minimum qualification is a Ph.D. in history, Black/Africana Studies or a related field by start of appointment.

 

Desired Qualifications:

• An ongoing research trajectory in African American History.
• Ability to teach a range of courses in African American and African Diaspora History (online and in person).
• The successful candidate will have the capacity to build strong scholarly and collegial relationships with colleagues in African American Studies, and also with colleagues in the other units of SST.
• Demonstrated success in meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or diverse communities.

 

Essential Functions:

Typical teaching load is two courses per semester (undergraduate, graduate, online etc.).

Develop new courses in African American History.

Active research in areas of specialization.

Participation in service to the unit, the school, and the university.
