Assistant Professor - in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience

Assistant Professor - in Developmental Cognitive Neuroscience

University of California, San Diego

We invite applications for an Assistant Professor position in the Cognitive Science Department (http://cogsci.ucsd.edu).

We are looking for candidates who specialize in human developmental science and have made independent, original research contributions in this area. We are especially interested in scientists who take an interdisciplinary perspective and apply integrative approaches aimed at bridging levels of analysis. These levels might combine cognitive-behavioral, socio-cultural, neural systems, genetic, epigenetic, molecular, and/or computational investigations of developmental phenomena. The successful candidate will be expected to lead an independent research program and supervise trainees at all levels, including undergraduate and graduate students.

The Department of Cognitive Science at UC San Diego boasts a broadly interdisciplinary faculty that has experienced substantial, rapid growth in recent years. The department places a strong emphasis on teaching and undergraduate education. Since the Fall of 2014 the number of enrolled undergraduates in the department has grown from 600 to nearly 2200, in large part because Cognitive Science faculty have spearheaded new majors or concentrations in Cognitive and Behavioral Neuroscience, Design, and Data Science - the latter two of which are affiliated with new research centers.

Cognitive Science faculty have research interests in a diverse set of phenomena, including affect, cognitive development, creativity, decision making, individual differences, executive function, gesture, language, learning and memory, math, music perception, vision, reasoning, and social interaction. We often combine multiple methodological and theoretical approaches, including behavioral neuroscience, comparative cognition, computational epigenomics, computational neuroscience, control theory, data science, electrophysiology, experimental psychology, eye tracking, field work, genomics, image processing, linguistic methodologies, machine learning, neuroimaging, and psychophysics.

The preferred candidate will have strong evidence of contribution to diversity, equity, and inclusion, and a desire to participate in advancing UC San Diego's commitment to excellence in a diverse and inclusive academic environment.

To apply for the tenure-track Assistant Professor position: Applicants must have a Ph.D. or equivalent doctorate degree in their area of expertise.

The successful candidate will be expected to teach and supervise trainees at all levels, including undergraduate and graduate levels, in developmental science courses and/or topics related to their area of expertise in a cognitive science department, and to conduct extramurally funded research. An interdisciplinary, collaborative perspective and experience with multiple methodologies is highly valued. Candidates applying at the rank of Assistant Professor should submit, via online application to https://apol-recruit.ucsd.edu/apply/JPF01918, (a) a short cover letter describing background and interests, (b) vita, (c) research statement, (d) teaching statement, (e) reprints of up to four representative publications, (f) personal statement summarizing their contributions (or potential contributions) to diversity and leadership (http://facultyequity.ucsd.edu/Faculty-Applicant-C2D-info.asp), and (g) a minimum of three letters of reference, (provide name, title, address and email). Evidence of other creative work may also be submitted (optional).

Appointments will begin July 1, 2019. Salary is commensurate with experience and based on the University of California pay scales.

Review of applications will start on December 18, 2018 and will continue until position is filled.
