Director of Campus Recreation

Director of Campus Recreation

Summary: Reporting to the Executive Director of Student Wellness and Assessment, the Director of Campus Recreation Services Recreation will provide visionary leadership and direction for a campus-wide recreation program including club sports, fitness, intramurals, open recreation, and special events. The incumbent will direct the operation of all recreational facilities. S/he will oversee two full-time professionals, one part time professional, club sport coaches, four graduate assistants, and sixty to seventy staff and per diem officials and instructors.

Campus Recreation recently was brought under the umbrella of Student Wellness Services to reflect St. John's integrated approach to student wellness. Student Wellness Services includes Student Health Services, Wellness Education and Prevention, Sexual Violence , Outreach Awareness, and Response, and the Center for Counseling and Consultation. The Department of Student Wellness is composed of a multidisciplinary team of professionals including psychologists, social workers, counselors, consulting psychiatrist, nurses, consulting physicians, a wellness coach, a nutritionist, and a team of graduate assistants.

Responsibilities:

  • Supervise two full time professionals, club sport coaches and three graduate assistants
  • Develop, oversee, and implementation of all recreational, intramural sports, sports clubs, and fitness programming
  • Prepare and submit weekly, monthly, and annual reports on the campus recreation program
  • Develop and submit proposals to enhance all aspects of the campus recreation program
  • Develop and maintain the departmental budge, including authorizing all payments and purchases and request budge Submit annual budget and capital requests based on departmental needs
  • Oversee the development of marketing and promotional materials for the campus recreation program
  • Oversee the development and implementation of a comprehensive intramural sports program,
  • Oversee all aspects of the sport club program, including reviewing and approving proposals for the formation of new sport clubs
  • Oversee the development and implementation of the fitness program, including the fitness center and campus wide programs
  • Oversee campus recreation programs to ensure risk management in liability issues
  • Oversee the purchase all department equipment, uniforms, giveaways and awards needed for the campus recreation program
  • Work with Athletic Department personnel in the daily facility management and scheduling of the recreation and fitness center and all outdoor fields, as well as, home game management for sport clubs and special events
  • Act as the liaison between the University and corporate sponsors of the Campus Recreation Department
  • Chair and/or serve on various University committees to ensure the campus recreation program meets the university community's needs
  • Attend meetings and conferences directly related to the campus recreation program, as well as meetings and conferences representing the university and the division of student affairs\
  • Evaluate programs and make recommendations each semester and annually
  • Prepare assessments of current programming
  • Prepare, review and submit reports as needed
  • Keeps supervisor informed of current trends and technology in campus recreation
  • Encourage collaboration across all campuses to ensure seamless and consistent implementation of best practices in campus recreation
  • Develop and maintain appropriate professional relationships with the university community, including faculty members, administrators, staff members and students
  • All other duties as assigned by Executive Director of Student Wellness and Assessment.


Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in Physical Education, Recreation, Sports Management or a related field required
  • Minimum of five years professional experience in the college recreation field or recreation and fitness industry Excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to travel and work non-traditional hours required
  • Certification in CPR, First Aid, and WED Required
  • Knowledge of trends in higher education and experience organizing campus recreation services to meet these trends/needs.
  • Knowledge of current health issues faced by college aged students (i.e., mental health, alcohol and other drug, and social issues on university campuses).
  • Demonstrated knowledge, sensitivity, and ability to work with students from diverse backgrounds
  • Experience with electronic databases
  • Membership in the National Intramural Recreational Sport Association (NIRSA), New York State Recreation and Parks Society (NYSRPS) and/or National Recreation and Parks Association (NRPA) preferred.
