Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Faculty Affairs and Academic

Job Summary

Columbus State University (CSU) invites applications and nominations for the position of Associate Provost and Associate Vice President for Faculty and Academic Innovation. This position reports directly to the Provost and Executive Vice President and is a key member of the Academic Affairs team, Deans' Council, Academic Council and participates in university-wide decision making and planning. The successful candidate will have an exciting opportunity to advance academic excellence through engagement, collaboration, and innovation.

Overseeing faculty processes, student appeals and concerns, and academic innovation, the Associate Provost leads and coordinates university-wide policies, processes, and practices associated with faculty and student work. The Associate Provost and AVP works in close collaboration with deans, academic department chairs, and other university offices and functions as applicable to further innovation and the strategic and operational objectives of Columbus State University.

Responsibilities

  • Working closely with deans, associate deans, and department chairs in matters related to faculty personnel and academic policies.
  • Working closely with the Director of the Faculty Center to champion and support faculty and staff development opportunities for high-impact, active, and experiential learning practices.
  • Leading university-wide strategic initiatives through innovation and creativity, including QEP, transformative learning, and creative partnerships.
  • Developing and maintaining collaborative relationships with the Provost and Executive Vice President, senior administrators, deans, directors, managers, and stakeholders to meet University goals and objectives.
  • Working collaboratively with the Diversity and Inclusion Officer to enable the University to achieve its equity, diversity and inclusion goals in faculty hiring and retention.
  • Providing oversight responsibility for all personnel processes related to faculty and academic affairs student support staff (instructional and librarian faculty, academic success coaches, and academic advisors.)
  • Overseeing employee relations for faculty employment status disputes, grievances, and disciplinary actions.
  • Reviewing and determining student appeals of decisions made at the college level.
  • Ensuring compliance with Columbus State University and University System of Georgia policies and procedures.
  • Practicing servant leadership and is proactive in communicating policies and procedural changes.
  • Seeking faculty input and is available to hear faculty concerns.
  • Serving as a member and/or co-chair of the Behavioral Assessment Recommendation Team (BART)
  • Maintaining knowledge of CSU faculty workload policies and Standards of Excellence for promotion and tenure.
  • Conducting workshops for faculty unit employees and appropriate administrators on recruitment, the reappointment, tenure and promotion process, department chair leadership, and other personnel processes, as appropriate.
  • Overseeing and monitoring Academic Continuity plans for all units under Academic Affairs.
  • Overseeing procedures for the student course evaluation process and participates in recommending changes to the evaluation process.
  • Overseeing the Academic Affairs website and publications.
  • Participating in Shared Governance as it relates to academic and faculty personnel policies.
  • Coordinating other projects as assigned by the Provost and Executive Vice President.


Required Qualifications

  • Terminal Degree appropriate to the applicant's academic field of expertise.
  • Successful university teaching experience and a record of research, scholarly and creative activity sufficient to merit appointment as a tenured associate or full professor.
  • At least four years of successful administrative experience at or above the level of department chair or equivalent.
  • Knowledge in the broad spectrum of activities that relate to faculty personnel processes.
  • Experience in academic personnel administration, policies, and procedures.
  • Experience in maintaining confidentiality and discretion regarding highly sensitive personnel matters.
  • Demonstrated ability to work successfully with shared governance.
  • Demonstrated ability to work and communicate effectively in a highly diverse campus community.
  • Effective oral and written communication to students, faculty, staff, and community members.
  • Proven ability in leading teams, setting goals, monitoring performance, and holding a team accountable for results.
  • Record of sound and ethical decision-making, integrity, and professionalism.
  • A strong commitment to professional development and record of accomplishment of engagement with professional associations.
  • A demonstrated passion for promoting and supporting active and transformative learning across the university.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Thoughtful, change agent who is able to manage and embrace ambiguity, lead change and culture shifts, while promoting consistency in quality and excellence.
  • Knowledge and experience in the area of student mentorship, faculty development, and department chair leadership training.
  • Demonstrated ability to successfully recruit and mentor faculty.
