Grant Support Specialist

Position Summary:
The Grant Support Specialist will provide financial and administrative support for sponsored grants within the Department of Engineering Education. Serves as an advisor to and liaison between faculty and the Office of Sponsored Programs by providing assistance and oversight with sponsored research policies and procedures. This position will assist in managing time-sensitive issues, exercising sound judgment within defined procedures and policies, and determining appropriate actions needed to bring grants to timely fulfillment. Position will also interact with Co-PIs and their grant administrators in other departments and universities for interdisciplinary and inter-institutional projects. Tasks may include, but are not limited to: proposal assistance, preparing financial reports, developing budget forecasts, payroll administration and effort planning, monitoring fiscal activities, records management, facilitating travel and PARS certifications, grant meeting coordination, and broadly communicating programmatic information of the grants to a diverse audience. This position will report to the Business Manager and assist with various administrative duties of the department as needed.
The Grant Support Specialist is an essential team member who is ambitious in researching issues and gathering information to solve problems. They are able to work independently and cooperatively with little supervision while maintaining confidentiality and policy compliance. They will produce work with a high degree of accuracy that is timely, concise, and well organized.

Required Qualifications:
• Successful candidate will have a minimum of a two-year college degree and work experience providing fiscal support, budgeting, and reporting in an academic or professional setting (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
• Familiarity with the overall process of sponsored research proposals, awards, and grant administration.
• Demonstrated experience in prioritizing tasks, applying policies, and meeting deadlines.
• Must have business computer proficiency especially with Microsoft Office applications, and adapt quickly to new software tools.
• Demonstrated trouble shooting and problem solving skills.
• Excellent interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.
• Ability to multi-task and work independently with minimal supervision.
• Must be an enthusiastic team player, have a strong work ethic, and be interested in supporting a sponsored research environment.

Preferred Qualifications:
• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Business Administration, or related field.
• Research administration experience with knowledge of federal funding regulations, proposal development, and pre/post-award procedures.
• Higher Ed, governmental, or other fund accounting background.
• Experience working with payroll, travel reimbursements, purchasing, and overhead processing.
• Proficiency with Banner Finance and HRIS , MicroStrategy, and HokieMart or equivalent software.
• Desktop publishing or website management abilities would be helpful.
• Working knowledge of University policies and procedures.
