Assistant Professor, Ethics (not meta-ethics)

Position Summary:
The Department of Philosophy at Virginia Tech invites applications for a tenure-track position, to begin August 10, 2019. Rank: Assistant Professor. AOS : Ethics (not meta-ethics); AOC : Open. Primary teaching responsibilities will be in areas of applied ethics. Successful candidate will be expected to reach out to and participate in interdisciplinary university teaching and research programs where ethical issues need to be addressed. Potential areas of research and teaching focus include applied issues in social and political philosophy, science, business, health, technology, and the environment. The Philosophy Department would look favorably upon individuals who could contribute to the department's interdisciplinary major in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics ( PPE ). The standard teaching load is four courses per academic year, including one graduate course. Evidence of excellence in research and teaching required. Salary competitive. PhD in Philosophy completed by August 2019. In addition to offering a first class MA in Philosophy, the department is a major component of two interdisciplinary PhD programs: Science and Technology Studies; and The Alliance for Social, Political, Ethical and Cultural Thought. Required Qualifications:
PhD in Philosophy.
AOS in Ethics (not meta-ethics).
Demonstrated commitment to research and teaching in applied ethics.
Evidence of research excellence or promise thereof.

Preferred Qualifications:
Experience teaching courses in applied ethics.
Interdisciplinary experience.
Demonstrated interest in PPE (Program in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics).
